"Kids, let me tell you the story of how I met your mother".
But seriously, if this story doesn't make you believe in fate/God's plan/the universe, we don't know what will.
Josh grew up in Brampton and Thornhill Ontario, not too far outside the city of Toronto proper. Through many twists and turns, ups and downs, Josh's medical education ended up bringing him south of the border to study in Saba and complete his residency in internal medicine in the United States. Knowing he wanted to be an intensivist, he accepted a fellowship at the University of Florida in 2023, moving there with no expectations.
On the other hand, Larissa grew up in Barrie, Ontario, about an hour north of Toronto (but far enough north to be referred to as "cottage country" by Josh). Her education also brought her south, playing collegiate soccer and completing her undergrad and PhD in Alabama, before moving to Gainesville to pursue a post-doc. Eventually, in 2023, she joined the University of Florida as faculty.
The crazy part is, though we grew up 45 minutes apart, we did not meet each other until we both ended up in Gainesville many years later. Like most modern love stories, ours began scrolling on Bumble - thank god we are loyal to a fault Toronto Maple Leafs fans:
On January 17th 2024, we went on our first date at the Top... and then Arcade Bar... and then axe throwing. Josh knew he had found someone special when he got to her car and saw this:
Well folks, after 3 dates and a trip to Gasperilla, Josh came over to Larissa's house and never really left. It was an instant, obvious connection that neither of us were expecting. We both felt like we had known each other forever.
Fast forward through many adventures, Josh tricked Larissa into going home for "his Dad's early birthday party" in January of 2025. Little did Larissa know that yes... we would celebrate Josh's Dad, but that the celebration would be shared by their engagement.
On the year anniversary of our first date, Josh popped the question after an elaborate ruse that got Larissa to Nathan Phillip's square. Our entire family came down to Toronto, and we celebrated the only way we know how... eating good food and drinking fantastic drinks (rumour has it Larissa is still recovering from her hangover until this day). We are so incredibly grateful that both of our siblings, their fiancés, and our parents were all there to be a part of the special day.
We cannot wait to celebrate our love story with you all on September 5, 2026!! Mark your calendars for mischief and festivities!!
Much love,
Larissa and Josh
