It all began in 2021, when Quentan and Lauren's paths first crossed at Varsity Truck in Manhattan, Kansas. They were both in line for some of the best grilled cheese mac and cheeses around—but it wasn’t just Quentan and Lauren who were meeting that night. It was actually Lauren’s parents, Shane and Marcia, who had the first encounter with Quentan and his cousin, Nate. As they were about to leave, Quentan turned to Lauren and said, “I’ll see you around.” To which Lauren shot back, “No, you won’t.” Safe to say, Quentan won their first disagreement. The next morning, after a late night out in the Ville, Marcia was adamant: Lauren needed to find “that Q guy." She was convinced he was someone special. Lauren, of course, did what any daughter would do—she listened to her mom. After a bit of searching, she found Quentan on Facebook. Both Quentan and Marcia were impressed that Lauren managed to track him down with such an unusual spelling of his name and no clue about his last name. Quentan added her back, but soon enough, Lauren decided it was all a bit too strange and deleted him. End of story? Not quite. A few weeks later, Lauren found herself out in the Ville with friends when she spotted Quentan. Of course, she was trying to avoid him—after all, she had ghosted him without any explanation. But, to her surprise, Quentan walked right up to her, asking why she had deleted him. Embarrassed, Lauren mumbled an excuse and added him back again to clear the air. Not long after, Lauren was at a wedding with her parents when Marcia brought up "that Q guy" yet again. Lauren tried to explain why it wouldn’t work, but Marcia wasn’t having it. She fired back, “You better message him, or I will.” Anyone who knows Marcia knows she wasn’t joking. So, Lauren, now in full panic mode, sent Quentan a message that basically said, “I’m messaging you because if I don’t, my mom is going to.” From that point on, it seemed like fate was pulling them together. Over the next two months, they kept running into each other around town, far too many times to be a coincidence. One day, at the beginning of October, Quentan approached Lauren and asked, “Is this fate?” That was the moment they both realized maybe it was. A few weeks later, Quentan asked Lauren to dinner at Chick-Fil-A. Lauren, unaware that this was a date, said yes—wearing athletic shorts and a t-shirt. She was in for a surprise when she walked downstairs to find Quentan standing by the passenger side of his car, holding the door open. Lauren was even more caught off guard when, as Quentan was walking around the car to get in, her best friend Christin pulled into the parking lot. And the best part? Quentan waved. Trying to avoid the inevitable awkwardness, Lauren figured she’d explain things to Christin later, but soon realized that this dinner was anything but meaningless. They spent hours at Chick-Fil-A, then drove around Manhattan, talking for even longer. After that, things moved quickly. Quentan went on a golf trip, and Lauren set some imaginary boundaries for what she assumed would be a short-lived relationship. But on October 31, 2021, Quentan asked Lauren to be his girlfriend, and the rest, as they say, is history.
