Our Wedding

Get ready, this is 10 years in the making (literally).

We met in September 2008 as two freshmen at San Francisco State University. Only a month into school we were asked by another student to be the founding members of Improv Nation. Jon as a theater major and Lauren as a high school improv award winner-it just made sense. For two years we spend hours of time in basement classrooms, cramped dorm rooms and propaganda events for our shows before any sparks flew. It wouldn’t be until 2010 when a long form improv sketch about reality shows would realize that maybe there was something more (lets be real, Jon’s character took his shirt off a lot.) Lauren pulled all the stops by letting Jon drive her manual 2004 BMW Z3 all while hoping he would eventually enjoy the company as well. It finally worked, when on April 17th 2011 we made this thing official. We have moved across state lines (twice), been on countless adventures to beautiful places, been through challenges, eaten far too much sushi, got a Stanley (then recently, a Jimmy), bought a house, and laughed our hearts out over the last 10 years. Finally, 10 years to the day we got married! That’s right, we couldn’t wait while the world went through a dang pandemic! We can’t wait to celebrate with you-We waited 3,520 days (then an extra 410 days to celebrate with you)—party accordingly.

The Engagement 

I planned my own engagement and I didn’t even know it. Jon is a smart man, if it had gone any other way I would have been tipped off immediately-well done dude.   For my 30th birthday, on August 8th, I planned a weekend adventure with Jon, Marissa and Kelsey. I was looking forward to a hike, wine, cheese and homemade pasta.  Marissa had recently done a hike to High Rock Lookout out near Mt. Rainier that offered dead center views of the beautiful mountain-and we love her. The hike is about 1.5 miles with 1,300 foot elevation gain, so straight up but short.  Kelsey was picking flowers along the way, everyone seemed so very normal. I’ll tell ya-everyone knew except me.  As we got to the top and shouted about how beautiful it was we set up for photos. I didn’t see Jon grab the ring, I didn’t notice that both Marissa and Kelsey we’re taking photos or filming. I just wanted a Polaroid photo of this wild view (even without Mt. Rainer making an appearance.) I’ve seriously questioned my own observation skills after this event.   Jon got on one knee, on what felt like the exact edge and my words were “oh no, I don’t know what to do. No! What!? Oh my god. I can’t see. Shut up!” I’m sure I said yes in there somewhere.   Jon had created a custom engagement ring using the wedding rings from our maternal grandmothers. I feel incredibly honored to have such a special ring to carry with me. I know Nana is happy about this, even though I never met Jons grandmother but I hear she would be as well.   Thank you to everyone who made this such a special day and somehow managing to keep it a secret. Mom, how did we talk on the drive to the hike and you didn’t say a word! I’m so proud of you!

The Wedding 2021

In 2011 we never could have predicted that 10 years later we would be in the center of a global pandemic—yet that’s where we found ourselves in 2021. We couldn’t imagine getting married without our most important people present, it’s not our nature. Too many people have been active in our lives for the last 10+ years and we wanted to celebrate WITH YOU as we celebrated each other. We will tell ya, even though we never would have planned it, we wouldn’t change it for the world. It was so wonderful to share an intimate day with each other to celebrate our love. We had an incredible photographer who captured such beautiful moments of this day-were so fortunate. We cannot wait to have a part two of our wedding and celebrate with all of our people with an open bar, tacos and no curfew!

Our Story

Day of 

Yes, the wedding is in Oregon! Just outside of Portland in North Plains. The Portland (PDX) airport is the best airport for flights.

We know you’ve got a snazzy outfit in your closet that you haven’t been able to wear recently. Get dressed up! Attire is Cocktail fancy (is that a thing?) The ceremony will be on grass, and we will be outside for the entire evening.

The wedding site and reception are right next to each other-easy party access! When you arrive please let the host know you are here for “The Riley Wedding” and they will direct you where to park. There is a short walk from the parking lot to the site, feel free to drive all the way down if you need extra assistance. Please know--there is NO cell service at the wedding site. We have coordinated a limited shuttle service pick up from the wedding venue at the end of the night to hotel if you prefer not to drive. We have also set up WiFi at our event if you do prefer to take a rideshare option. Please look in the Q&A for further information.

Day After 

We are so excited that you have decided to spend your holiday weekend with us! Please join us for more weekend fun Sunday, May 29th, at Ecliptic Brewing (825 North Cook Street Portland, OR, 97227) anytime after noon for more great food and beer! This will be a casual event to be able to spend more time together post wedding because we just cannot get enough! Ecliptic has a small parking lot as well as street parking near by!

Portland Japanese Garden 

More than 10,000 individual rose bushes bloom in the International Rose Test Garden (IRTG) from late May through October, representing over 610 different rose varieties. The majority of roses in the Garden are commercially available. About 10 to 20 varieties are replaced each year with some of the best new roses released onto the market. The primary purpose of the Garden is to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties. In the beginning, while World War I was raging, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland’s garden for testing.

Located right in Washington Park, there are more than 1,900 animals of more than 230 species. Lauren remembers coming here with her grandparents as a child while visiting them at their home in Hillsboro, OR

Oregon Zoo

Located  just a 30- minute drive outside of Portland. Visiting Multnomah Falls, a 611-foot-tall roaring, awe-inspiring cascade of icy water, lets you experience the power and beauty of nature up close and with ease. From the parking area off of I-84, a 5-minute walk is all that separates you from the exhilarating spray at the base of the falls.

We are a big fan of Pine State, especially this location. You’ve got photo ops, you’ve got shopping AND you’ve got salt and straw ice cream all on the same block—-what a treat!

Things to Do

Kelsey and I just celebrated our 20 years of friendship! We met in 2001 in 6th grade at Village Christian, we have been essentially inseparable since. We even moved to Washington together and life has been so good! Kelsey and I will always back each other up, even if have made a complete wrong turn we do so with confidence!!

Marissa and I met in Oakhurst, CA after my family moved in 2005 at a birthday party! I am forever grateful for that party, I got an incredible friend who became my roommate in San Francisco,  traveled across the US (twice) and been on many international trips with! Marissa is the gal who will always say yes to buying the pair of shoes and a last minute plane ticket!

We met in 2009 when Molly joined Improv Nation at SFSU! Molly is an incredibly talented improviser and comedian which made us quick friends. Molly is a “yes and” person through and through! She is the person who will always convince me to walk into an open house party because “wouldn’t that be a great story” and boy is it!

Molly Sanchez

USC gave me a great education and career path AND it also gave me my soul sister! Corinne and I met in 2014 in our small MSW class, we even shared an internship! Corinne has been an advocate for me and many others through this wet and wild world. Being friends with Corinne for the last few years feels like a lifetime, in the best possible way.

Chloe is my longest friend, we met in the 3rd grade at Sunland Elementary! And even though I joke that we weren’t friends at Village Christian we remained buddies throughout school and was thrilled to see her on campus at SFSU the first day in 2008! We again reconnected and grew one of the strongest friendship groups to date! 3rd grade us is so proud! 

Chloe Romley

In 2017 I started a new job at a residential facility for teenage boys on probation alongside Spencer—which meant we were confused for each other for nearly two years (we learned just to respond to both names.) Spencer has a matched love for pasta, good wine and reality TV shows that makes her the friend everyone needs. 

Spencer Harden 

Shawn and I met way back when. We were both five. The first time he ever came over he knocked me out as we were pushing my swing set back and forth (rather than one of us on it for some reason), and was quickly ushered home. Thankfully, that wasn't enough to end our friendship before it began and we've been brothers ever since. Basically inseparable.

I have known Kiernan for a pretty long time, but we really came to know each other and became closer much later during our times as roommates in San Francisco in our college days. We love to nerd out about music and thankfully have very similar tastes. We're also both drummers, and the day he told me I was really good was the best day. He's easily the best drummer I know. 

Kiernan Mooney 

I met Evan at Sunday school back when we were four or so. Our friendship started on a disagreement between the coolness of fighter jets vs. WWII fighter planes and we've been battling ever since. Between sword fighting and airsoft battles in our youth, to reconnecting in Washington and enjoying track days together and video games a plenty, it's always a good time. I look forward to celebratory cigars and whiskey bud!

Evan Englesby

Taylor and I met in eighth grade and were fast friends. He has this infectious talent of being able to get a whole room cracking up with nonstop laughter, and then can switch gears and be a real attentive friend always happy to be there for you. Also, my Pink Floyd and prog rock obsession? You can blame this guy and his wonderful family for that one. 

Taylor Morfett

I met John (Mansaw as we call him) a good while ago, but we became much closer friends during our time together in high school band. Any time I see an episode of The Office and laugh at a classic Jim Halpert prank, I miss Mansaw. He was definitely a pretty dry humored prankster in high school, but now it's all about hanging digitally via video games and our obsession of the last few years, bouldering. Send it brooo!

John Manseau

I’ve known Sean for so long I’m not even very sure when it was I met him. But I am sure that whenever we have the chance to kick it, great times are guaranteed. Being the Felix to his Oscar in our high school production of The Odd Couple is still, to this day, one of my favorite roles I’ve ever played. Be it scatting together for 20 minutes straight, playing video games, or jamming in the good ol’ shed, it’s always a good time in the company of Sean!
