It was August of 2021 at the Indiana State Fair, Layne was in her fourth year of vet school doing a rotation in the livestock barn when she decided to take a lap around the cattle barn with her friend, Taylor. Taylor stopped at a stall to chat with Sam during this time. Sam did not introduce himself to Layne but shortly after, text Taylor to ask for her number.

The next day, he finally worked up the courage to text her, "Hey it's Sam!! What's up?." They went on a dinner date that same week and were officially dating by October of 2021. During those first few months of dating, Layne was gone for rotations in California, Oklahoma and North Dakota for a few weeks at a time but Sam just couldn't stay away. He even flew out to Oklahoma and chauffeured Layne to her next destination in North Dakota. This was conveniently in January and during the middle of a blizzard. Layne was very thankful for Sam during this time and knew he was a keeper.

In May of 2022, Layne finally graduated from vet school and Sam took a day off from planting to come celebrate with her! Shortly after, Layne started her first job which required her to travel the country collecting cows every week. Layne and Sam were only able to see each other a few days a month for the following year. Long distance does indeed make the heart grow fonder.

Finally, after Sam asking a million times, Layne moved back home and moved in with him in 2023. They have been living together ever since and have acquired a few cows along the way as well as two house cats, much to Sam's dismay.

Finally, on November 15th, 2024 at Louisville, Sam decided he was ready to spend forever with Layne, even though she tried to ruin the entire proposal. He popped the big question at the cattle stalls and Layne said yes. Now they are planning a wedding and cannot wait to celebrate with all their family and friends on May 30th!
