On December 10, 2022, the stars aligned—or, more accurately, two unrelated celebrations collided for some karaoke at The World Famous Mr. Norms. Zach, dutifully attending the joint birthday party for his friends Riley and Jackson, and I, supporting my friend Kate’s graduation, found ourselves unwitting participants in what can only be described as an elaborate matchmaking scheme. The evening began like any other: with me unexpectedly running into my dad and stepmom, Sierra, because of course they would also be at Norms. My stepmom, a self-appointed matchmaker, decided that Zach, conveniently standing nearby, might just be my perfect match. She introduced us, and while I awkwardly tried to process the moment, Zach, looking thoroughly unamused by this unexpected setup, had me convinced he was counting down the seconds until his escape. Naturally, I felt terrible for him. But the plot thickened. Mere minutes later, Zach’s sister-in-law, Lindsey, unaware of the first attempt at matchmaking, boldly approached me with the opening line of the century: “Hi, I’m Lindsey! Do you want a boyfriend?” A stellar icebreaker, to be sure. Caught off guard, I managed to stammer, “Uh… well… I don’t know? Who is it?” Lindsey, with the finesse of someone sealing a major business deal, turned and pointed directly at Zach. Once Lindsey pointed to Zach, I couldn’t help but blurt out, “Oh, you’ve GOT to be kidding me.” Lindsey, clearly confused, and maybe a little offended, snapped her head around and clarified, “I’m his sister-in-law.” As if that explained everything. Not wanting to leave her hanging, I explained, “My stepmom literally tried this five minutes ago.” At this point, my internal monologue was running wild: Wow, this guy is a total loser. He’s got my stepmom AND his sister-in-law running interference for him? No thanks. It was almost as if Lindsey could read my mind because she launched into a detailed PowerPoint presentation—verbally, of course—about all of Zach’s incredible qualities. And let me tell you, this presentation was thorough. Just when I thought we might wrap things up, the interrogation began. “Where do you live? Where did you go to school? Do you have a job?” The questions came at me faster than dodgeballs in P.E. class. Eventually, after what felt like a comprehensive background check, Lindsey asked for my number. Not for herself, of course, but to pass along to Zach. After Lindsey’s matchmaking efforts, I was absolutely convinced I’d never hear from Zach. So, imagine my surprise when, the following evening, I received a text from an unknown number asking if I’d like to see Christmas lights the next weekend. Spoiler alert: it was Zach. Luckily, I happened to be pulling into my friend Phoebe’s driveway at the time. I walked into her house, where her entire family was gathered in the living room, and casually announced, “Some guy just asked me on a date.” Naturally, chaos ensued. Everyone jumped up, screamed, and immediately got to work on an FBI-level background check. Instagram? Checked. Facebook? Scoured. The Hard Times? Yes, even that. The only piece of intel we uncovered was a photo Zach’s mom had tagged him in. While analyzing this crucial evidence, I noticed the woman in the center (his mom) looked incredibly familiar. After a bit of mental digging, it hit me—she was a teacher at my high school. With this groundbreaking discovery, I made the bold assumption that Zach was not, in fact, a kidnapper. He seemed safe enough to go on a date with.
