Is Cartagena safe?

Yes. Like every major city, there are parts of the city to avoid. As long as you stay within the most touristic areas, it is completely safe. Be aware of your belongings at all times. Also, we recommend to keep your wallet and phone in your front pocket and do not leave your purse/bag unattended.

What currency does Colombia use?

Colombia uses the Colombian Peso (COP). Currently, the dollar is doing very well compared to the Colombian Peso. Therefore, 1 USD is approximately 4,000 Pesos. In general for Americans, food, taxis, alcohol, excursions, etc... are 3-4 times cheaper than what they would cost in the USA. There are plenty of currency exchanges at the airport and within the city.

Can I purchase items from local vendors?

Yes, Cartagena has many beautiful boutique shops and street vendors. Please be aware that street vendors know that you are American. Therefore, they will try to charge you twice as much, sometimes even three times as much, than they would charge the average Colombian. It is fairly easy to negotiate with vendors. Essentially, just don't accept the first price that is thrown at you.
