Travel

Transportation

You may fly into either Bush-Hobby or Houston Intercontinental, but either way we would suggest renting a car. Houston is a sprawling city, and the drive from the airport to the venue can be an hour long. Your best options for hotels will be in the downtown area of Houston, inside of the I-610 Highway Loop. However, there are some more affordable options outside of town. If you are concerned about your choice of hotel or if you would like a specific recommendation, please feel free to email or call us anytime.

Buffalo Bayou Park

Shepherd Drive to Sabine Street, between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive - Houston, TX

Buffalo Bayou Park has an almost countless list of available activities, free of charge, but we recommend visiting the Waugh Bat Colony. Every evening at sunset, more than 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from crevices found in the Waugh Drive Bridge. These creatures are non-migratory and call the bayou home year-round. You can learn more about the bats through interpretive signage found at the site. Stop by any night and view this amazing sight!

The Nutcracker at Wortham Theatre

501 Texas Ave, Houston, TX 77002

The Houston Ballet has its origins in the Houston Ballet Academy, which was established in 1955 under the leadership of Tatiana Semenova, a former dancer with the Ballets Russes. In 1969, the foundation formed a professional ballet company under the direction of Nina Popova, also a former dancer with the Ballet Russes and the American Ballet Theatre. From 1976–2003, Englishman Ben Stevenson, a former dancer with Britain's Royal Ballet and English National Ballet, served as artistic director of Houston Ballet. Under Stevenson's leadership, the ballet transformed "from regional to international prominence".

Every year, The Houston Ballet produces its world-reknown Nutcracker ballet performance, and hosts its Nutcracker Market as a fundraiser. It is a Houston event that really cannot be missed. Luckily, our ceremony is happening on opening weekend!
