What’s the best way to get to Cuenca?

The most convenient way to fly into Cuenca is by arriving at Mariscal La Mar Airport (CUE). You can get a direct flight to Cuenca from Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE). Check out our Travel Page for more details on flights and transportation options!

Do I need to check my passport?

Yes! Ecuador requires that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Make sure to double-check your expiration date before booking your trip!

How should I handle my phone and internet while in Ecuador?

Before you leave, check with your phone carrier about international plans or consider options like eSIMs, temporary SIM cards, or relying on WiFi for calls and messaging (apps like WhatsApp work great).

What currency does Ecuador use?

Good news! Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar (USD), so no need to exchange money. Just bring small bills, as larger ones can be harder to break.

How do I get around Cuenca?

Ecuador doesn’t have Uber or Lyft, but taxis are very common and inexpensive. We highly recommend taking taxis rather than renting a car—driving in Ecuador is very different from the U.S.! The Cuenca Tramway (Tranvía de Cuenca) is a modern light rail system that runs through the city, making it an easy and affordable way to get around. The tramway spans from Parque Industrial to Rio Tarqui, passing through the historic city center, making stops at key areas like Parque Calderón. Tickets cost $1.00 per ride, and you can purchase them at ticket machines located at the stations. Simply buy a ticket, tap it at the entry gates, and enjoy the ride!

Will I need to speak Spanish?

You’ll find a decent number of people who speak some English, but learning a few basic Spanish phrases can go a long way! Brush up on some essentials, like: ¡Hola! (Hello!) Gracias (Thank you) Una cerveza, por favor (A beer, please!)

Where should I stay?

Cuenca has plenty of great Airbnbs and hotels! You can find recommendations on our Travel Page to help you pick the perfect spot.

Any food and drink tips?

Ecuadorian food is delicious, and we highly recommend trying the local specialties! Just a couple of quick tips: Drink bottled water and skip the ice to avoid any stomach issues. Ease into the local cuisine—your stomach might need a little time to adjust, so maybe don’t go too wild on day one!

Anything important I should know before arriving?

One fun thing to note—Cuenca locals typically prefer instant coffee! If you’re a caffeine addict who needs a strong brew to start the day, we recommend bringing your own ground coffee and booking a hotel or Airbnb with a coffee maker.
