Air Travel

You'll probably be flying through SeaTac. On your way out of town be aware security is SLOW. Plan to arrive a full two hours early (don't believe us? see here). If you don't have TSA PreCheck, we highly recommend using SeaTac's free TSA reservation service SpotSaver. This will let you sign up for a security appointment time, go to a designated area, and skip the line. You can sign up 5 days before your flight (and we've signed up as late as on the light rail to the airport). We always use SpotSaver.

Other Accommodations

Airbnb and Vrbo are both good options as well.

If you're looking for a less expensive hotel in Seattle, and notice that prices are quite a bit cheaper along Aurora Avenue (AKA Highway 99) north of N 70th Street, there's a reason for that and we would recommend against staying there unless you're used to navigating the less desirable areas of cities. The same goes for hotels in Pioneer Square.

Getting around Seattle

While you can rent a car, driving in Seattle is tricky. Not only are side roads very narrow (where out of towners might see a one-way street, Seattleites see a fully functional two way street complete with a bike lane), but also the intersections can be wild (see Peter Gorman's artistic rendering of some of Seattle's classic intersections).

To avoid driving in Seattle, we highly recommend taking advantage of Seattle's public transit options.

The Link light rail goes straight from the airport to downtown Seattle/the venue/the hotel blocks (unless otherwise noted). Tickets can be purchased at all light rail stations. If you buy an Orca card, light rail rides are tap on/tap off.

The bus system is also extensive, although the bus schedule is more of a suggestion. If you're using buses, you can pay with cash on board, buy an Orca card at light rail stations, or download the Transit GO Ticket app any pay with your phone.

Google Maps will provide comprehensive instructions for public transit trips. Lizzy also recommends using OneBusAway to check if buses are running early or late, but Nick just uses Google Maps.

Travel to Venue

The Burke Museum is located on the northwest corner of UW's Seattle campus. Take the University District light rail stop, and it's a straight shot 0.1 mile walk to the venue.

There is a paid parking lot next to the museum (N1) with ample spaces available on a first-come-first-served basis. There's also some free street parking north of NE 45th on side streets, but be aware that area includes Greek Row.

We are happy to pay for parking for any guests for whom public transit would be tricky due to disabilities or are over 65 (there will be an option in RSVP), but we want to strongly encourage public transit for those who are able.
