Lu and Luke met in the spring of 2019 at track practice, or rather, Lu met Luke. To Lu's embarrassment, Luke pointed out that they'd attended the same schools for twelve years. After Luke kindly forgave Lu's mistake, they became friends. Lu went off to Ohio State, and they kept in touch. When the COVID-19 lockdown sent everyone home, Lu sent Luke a Zoom link to catch up, and they planned their first date - a walk in their hometown, and the rest is history!

In the fall of 2020, Luke moved to Boston to start college. They spent three very long years dating long-distance. Lu got to visit and fall in love with Boston, where they've now started their life together. Even when Luke worked in Switzerland for eight months and they had a six-hour time difference, they persevered with long phone calls and exploring Switzerland and Germany together.

The long wait to be together in person finally ended when Lu moved to Boston for graduate school in the summer of 2023! The two decided they loved their Boston life so much that they decided to stay for Luke's graduate program. In the summer of 2025, Luke surprised Lu with a trip to Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine. Luke proposed (and Lu said yes!) on June 11. A couple celebrating their 52nd anniversary were the first to witness the moment, which Lu and Luke took as a sweet sign of encouragement for the start of their marriage.
