A Love Painted by Fate

Lucian Roan Avalon was born on April 4th, 1997, in Coyote, New Mexico, at the base of the very canyons that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe’s legendary paintings. Katherine Elizabeth Leidlein arrived nearly a year earlier on April 18th, 1996, in Houston, Texas, a city famously home to artists like Beyoncé, ZZ Top, and Megan Thee Stallion. It’s no surprise that these two would share a deep love for the arts, a passion that quietly pulled them toward each other until fate finally brought them together. Lucian and Kat’s artistic journeys ran parallel from early on. Kat attended Interlochen Arts Camp, while Lucian trained at Interlochen Arts Academy just one year apart, sharing several mutual friends. They even narrowly missed each other at the Aspen Music Festival - because Kat spent that summer auditioning in New York. The following summer, Kat moved to New York, and that’s where their story truly begins. Kat lived in a beautiful Hudson Yards apartment, renting a “flex room” from a woman who claimed they might stay a year. But, true to New York’s unpredictable nature, after just one month, the roommate announced, “Just kidding, I’m not renewing the lease, you have to move out in two weeks.” Faced with the challenge of finding a new place quickly, Kat turned to every website they could, eventually checking Craigslist in desperation. That’s where they met their future roommate: a Juilliard-trained horn player with two cats. Kat figured they’d have separate practice schedules and hoped their cats would get along. But Kat got so much more than just a practice buddy and feline harmony. Their roommate was good friends with Lucian’s roommate, an oboist. At a party, Kat and Lucian met for just five minutes, and in that brief moment, both felt something electric; love at first sight. Neither had believed in it before, but anyone who’s experienced it knows it hits like a ton of bricks. Soon, they began dating. Just a month later, Kat headed back to China to finish a tour, but their connection held strong. They called every day, determined to bridge the miles between them. And they never looked back. Today, Lucian and Kat happily call a brownstone in Manhattan home, where they raise two rambunctious cats, Cleo and Pher Pher. Their story has even more layers. Six years before they met, Kat studied at the Crittenden Institute alongside Lucian’s grandmother, Adriana. Though it was a brief two-week program, Adriana collected the contact info of all the singers to share with her daughter Robyn (Lucian’s Uma) for potential Alexander lessons. Years later, when Lucian and Kat started dating, Lucian’s mom (Katherine) searched for Kat on Facebook and exclaimed, “Lucian, this is the woman who pops up when Robyn calls me!” Somehow the contact information from all those summers ago got switched and when Robyn would call Katherine on WhatsApp, Kat's headshot would show up years before they met! Adding to the serendipity, Kat owns a watercolor painted by their grandmother (Sarah) of the mountains that frame Lucian’s childhood home, the same mountains that appear in their engagement photos. Their love story is woven with art, music, family, and a touch of destiny. Proof that sometimes, the universe really does conspire to bring two people together.
