You don't need to do anything to travel to Czech (and most of Europe) with an Australian passport for less than 90 days.
There is no visa requirement (the introduction of ETIAS (European Travel Authorisation and Information System) has been postponed to 2025).
The largest and best-connected airport in the Czech Republic is Václav Havel Airport Prague located approximately 15 km away from Prague city. Another nearby airport is Vienna.
Fastest connections from Australia are through the Middle East (Emirates, Qatar) or South Korea (Korean Air). Singapore Airlines are also highly recommended although require 2 stopovers via Singapore and a major European hub.
From Prague airport, you can get into Prague city easily with an airport express bus (AE) directly outside of the terminal, taxi or uber. Key connection points between the airport and the city are Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (Main Railway Station) (AE) or Zlicin station (Bus 100). Prague is connected with underground network, trams and buses.
The major global car rental companies operate around Europe and Czech. e.g. Budget
Things to know:
1. Driving is on the right side of the road
2. Most people drive manual cars, and rental companies have large stock of manuals, so watch out when booking and book early if you are after auto transmission.
3. Driving style can be a bit more aggressive in Europe compared to Australia with much higher speeds on highways.
Trains in Czech and Europe are generally one of the easiest ways to get around.
Prague lies at the hub of the Czech Republic’s excellent national rail network - there's hardly a town in the country which cannot be reached by direct train from the capital. The main railway station in Prague is Hlavní Nádrazí (abbreviated to Praha hl.n). Prague connects by rail to major European hubs including nearby Vienna, Berlin and Bratislava (all less than 3hrs away by rail) where trains leave every two hours to each of these cities. Prague also has direct daytime train services to a range of other cities, including Munich (5hrs 30 mins), Budapest (6hrs 30 mins), Kraków and Hamburg (both 7hrs away). Amsterdam, Brussels, Warsaw, Zurich and other cities can also be reached via train ride including overnight trains.
The national rail carrier is Ceske Drahy (CD). CD in cooperation with other national carriers connect all major European hubs. CD also connects all major cities within Czech as well as smaller towns and villages. International routes are available on EuroCity (EC) and Railjet (RJ) trains and within Czech on InterCity (IC) and SuperCity Pendolino (SC) trains.
There are also two private rail companies – RegioJet (RE) and Leo Express (LE). Both have high-quality high-speed trains and are often preferred for connection between large Czech cities because of newer fit-outs and better service on board (at relatively low cost) compared to CD but offer more limited connections. Both also operate bus services across Czech and European cities.
Bookings can also be done directly on the carriers website:
CD: https://www.cd.cz/en/default.htm
LE: https://www.leoexpress.com/en
There is also a search and booking aggregator for trains and other public transport - IDOS which has all transport providers in one place (but you'll need to use Google translator within your browser as there is no English version of the website)
