How We Met Duncan and Lucy’s story didn’t start off traditionally.&nbsp; After years of playing baseball with Lucy’s older brother, Nolan, Duncan began to notice something during his last season: Lucy was always in the same spot next to the home dugout, surrounded by her friends. Eventually, Duncan decided to (very bravely) break the “bro code” and text his best friend’s little sister.That summer was spent at the lake, with Duncan fishing and Lucy showing up with a whole crew of friends. After a while, Duncan decided it was time to make it official and asked Nolan for permission to take his sister on a real date, and the rest is history. Our First Date Their first official date was… memorable. Duncan showed up at Lucy’s house in Imperial with a bouquet of flowers, only to be greeted at the door by Sophie. They then headed to McCook, where Lucy got to experience the magic of… waiting in the car during Duncan’s eye appointment. Once that was over, they finally started their date at El Puetro. Lucy, far too nervous to actually eat, barely touched her food, while Duncan had no problem devouring an entire giant burrito.After dinner, they went to Barnett Park to feed bread to the geese at the pond (because nothing says romance like aggressive geese), and then wrapped up the night with a movie. It wasn’t the most glamorous first date, but it was perfectly “them’ sweet, simple, and full of laughter The Early Years Just a week later, Duncan asked Lucy’s dad, Mark, for permission to date her. After a nervous conversation, Mark gave his blessing. Shortly after, Duncan headed off to Kearney for college, meaning the two had to navigate long distance. They spent countless hours on the phone and FaceTime, and Duncan made every effort to drive home for Lucy’s events whenever he could. The distance was hard, but they believe it made their relationship stronger. Against Lucy’s parents’ wishes (but in true Duncan-and-Lucy fashion), they got a puppy, Willow, who quickly became part of the family. After Lucy finished high school, the couple no longer had to do long distance and were finally able to enjoy college life together in Kearney. Most of their time together has been spent fishing, watching movies, golfing, spoiling Willow, studying, and being with friends and family.The Proposal After Duncan graduated from UNK, he bought the perfect ring for Lucy (with a little help from her choosing it). He planned to propose on a ski trip in South Dakota with their closest friends. Lucy had her suspicions, but Duncan threw her off by breaking his ankle on the second day of the trip. The next day, everyone went outside to take pictures overlooking the mountains from their cabin balcony. At first, Duncan chickened out, but then he convinced Lucy to come back outside for “one more photo.” There she found him down on one knee, balancing on crutches and fighting through the pain, as he asked her to marry him. After celebrating with friends at the cabin, they headed into Deadwood for dinner and one more surprise: old-timey western photos to show off Lucy’s new ring.Our Future Duncan now works full-time at Kearney Flight Services on the grounds crew handling airplanes, and part-time bartending at Buffalo Ridge Golf Course. Lucy is finishing nursing school and will graduate in May 2026. After graduation, they plan to spend a few more years in Kearney before eventually moving back to the Imperial area, close to family, to plant their roots.
