Getting to St. John

Flights and Ferries and Cars

To get to St. John, you will need to fly in to St. Thomas (STT). Upon arrival to St. Thomas, you will take a taxi to the Red Hook Ferry Terminal. Approximate cost for the taxi is $15-$20 per person, depending on luggage. The ferry leaves every hour on the hour from Red Hook to St. John from 6 am until midnight. Ferry fare is $8.15 per person and $4 per bag, each way. Once on the island, there are many taxis readily available at the ferry dock to take you wherever you need to go. There are also car rentals on the island if you'd prefer to get around yourself. STT airport offers Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Enterprise. On the car barge, the driver and passengers ride along with the vehicle too. Three companies currently offer daily service between St. Thomas and St. John. You can plug in Red Hook Car Ferry Entrance in GPS to get you there A few things that are worth noting about the St. John Car Barge:- First, a port fee is collected by the Virgin Islands government at a designated booth just before entering the car barge loading area in Red Hook, St. Thomas. It is $3 per car, small SUV, or motorcycle, and $4 per truck, van, or large SUV. This port fee is separate from the fare for taking the car barge.- Next, the fare for the car barge is paid once on the actual barge. Tickets can be purchased for a one-way trip, or a round-trip fare. Tickets are not interchangeable between the three car barge companies. If you purchase a round-trip ticket, it is only good for the barge that issued it, so we suggest buying a one-way ticket. A one-way ticket is $65 per car- Third, the Red Hook ferry location services both passenger ferries and car ferries, but there are two separate docking areas for each type of ferry, with separate well-marked entrances.- Finally, it's a good idea to arrive at least 45 minutes before the car barge departure time you hope to catch. Getting Around

Taxis are readily available on St. John. They will take you to Cruz Bay, Coral Bay or any of the beaches along the way. The information book at your hotel or villa should provide taxi driver suggestions. Here are a few more:Chico 340-690-6507 Piper 340-344-4234

The first major thing that first time visitors to St. John notice is that the left side of the road is actually the “right” side of the road!&nbsp;When driving, remember to keep left at all times.

There are many villas and other options to choose from on the island! We recommend you start looking a year out as places get booked quickly for the high season.

There are many VRBOs and Airbnb's available for rent on the island. We recommend you stay closer to Cruz Bay (aka Town) so you're in closer proximity to the events/restaurants/bars/North Shore beaches. Accommodations

Love City

St. John, nicknamed "Love City," is the smallest and most idyllic of the three United States Virgin Islands. It is best known for its many white sand beaches, turquoise bays abounding in colorful corals &amp; rainbows of tropical fish and endless vistas of green velvet hills. Only nine miles long &amp; three miles wide, two thirds of the island is the Virgin Islands National Park, so its spectacular beaches and untouched forests will remain that way for generations to come.

Around Town

When greeting those who live on St. John, a “Good Morning”, “Good Afternoon”, or a “Good Night” will go a long way. Keep in mind that some things on St. John are truly on Island Time and patience is a great thing. Also, bathing suits are for the beaches. Please be sure to have a cover up on and males should have shirts on while in public places.

Cell Phone and Data Service 

AT&amp;T has the most reliable service on St. John. Sprint and T-Mobile, have limited coverage in the USVI. If you have Verizon, you will be roaming and you will incur fees. As a precaution, be sure to check with your provider before your trip to determine if you will have coverage while traveling.

Water, water, everywhere

Fresh water in the islands is as precious as gold. It comes from 2 sources: rain water collected in gutters and stored in the cistern, and desalinated salt water, which is trucked and delivered to homes and stored in the cistern. Use it to wash and brush your teeth, cook with it, etc. However, when you are parched for a tall glass of water, you may want bottled, because while it’s safe, the water we have in our home systems is not always that tasty. Conserve water when you can, it’s the island way… use all the water you need, but please try not to waste it.

Insects

are everywhere in a tropical climate, and while all rooms are exterminated on a regular basis, you may come face to face with an island critter. You can minimize this by keeping all foods in the refrigerator, and not leaving any food of any kind on the counters or table, this is simply an invitation to these little house invaders! Also, be sure to wear bug spray, especially between the hours of 4:30-6:30 when the no seeums are out.

Medical Care

For any medical needs, please visit the Clinic near the Ferry Dock. If you do have any emergency, always call 911 and state that you are on St. John because the calls do get routed through St. Thomas.

Safety 

St. John is among the safest islands in the Caribbean, and probably safer than your own home town. However, crime happens everywhere, so mind your belongings and take the same care with security around the island as you would at home.

STJ Things To Know

The most famous beach on the island! Lots of parking but it does fill up fast since this is the most popular beach. There is also taxi pick up and drop off. Facilities include snack bar, snorkel gear rentals, beach chair rentals, showers, restrooms. We love to come to this beach for sunset after the crowds have cleared out! There is also a snorkeling trail around the small cay that lies 30 yards off the beach. This is the only beach that requires an entry fee of $5 per person from sunrise to sunset

Always been a favorite beach! You can only access it off of Lind Point Trail which starts at the Virgin Islands Visitor Center. It's about 1 mile each way and takes about 20 minutes. Salomon Beach, also off the same trail, is the first two trails on the left, and Honeymoon Beach is the third trail to the left.

Honeymoon Bay

Best known for its crystal clear water. The beach is a half mile long, the longest beach on the island. Facilities include snack bar/grill, souvenir shop, restrooms, watersports rentals, and snorkel gear rental

Cinnamon Bay 

Beautiful beach but tends to be very busy and not a lot of parking. It is worth it for the sea turtle spotting so we suggest getting there early for a swim/snorkel then packing up and heading to another activity.

Maho Bay

best snorkel spot on the island! You do have to park and hike about half a mile each way. Access to the water is rocky and may have some sea urchins amongst the rocks, so be aware where you suit up and walk into the water! Definitely worth it if you're looking for great snorkeling.

Waterlemon Cay

Located in Coral Bay, this beach is a little gem. You do have to park and hike down to the beach (about 15 minutes one way) and there is limited parking. The bay has a seagrass bed that attracts sea turtles and two reefs on the outer edges.

Salt Pond Bay

If you're looking to get off the island, rent a boat or book a charter and explore! You can rent dinghies or small boats to take out yourself or get a boat with a captain. There are also charters with a variety of different activities and destinations that can fit exactly what you're looking for! You can stop at Lime Out - an awesome floating taco bar and even better drinks or you can go to the Pizza Pi - sailboat with delicious pizza

Charters and Boat Rentals

A lot of charter companies and ferries can take you to the BVIs but you must have a passport. The BVIs are home to White Bay where Soggy Dollar Bar is, where the painkiller was invented and Virgin Gorda where The Baths are located&nbsp;For more information on BVI travel, please see the link below:

Almost all restaurants have a great happy hour special and live music, the island is your oyster! For all restaurants, we highly recommend making reservations if they allow them. If you need to park in Cruz Bay, we recommend using Slim Man's Parking Lot
