Luis and Shirley met online in the fall of 2019. After exchanging a few messages, Luis wanted to meet this mystery woman. Luis, however, was preparing for a short-term mission trip to Peru. Would Shirley want to meet when he returned? Luis needed to know.

Luis sent Shirley a message informing her that he was going to be out of town for a couple of weeks but he would like to meet with her when he returned. Shirley did not respond.

Upon returning to Minnesota, Luis wondered if he should try to message Shirley again. He did not want to sound desperate nor did he want to give Shirley the wrong impression. Would Shirley respond positively? Was she even a real person? Luis needed to know.

This time, Shirley responded and agreed to meet Luis for dinner. Luis proceeded to ask Shirley for her phone number so he could contact her once he arrived at the restaurant. Shirley replied with nine digits. What was the missing digit? Was this a joke? Luis needed to know.

Luis sent a message to Shirley asking for her full phone number, to which Shirley replied, "There's a '1'."

Luis assumed the "1" was at the end of the nine digits she had given him. They met at the Cheesecake Factory for their first date and Luis was correct in the placement of the elusive "1."

The couple enjoyed dinner and dessert, followed by a walk in the adjacent mall, and ended with a conversation on a bench near the mall entrance. It was a great first date, but, would it lead to serious relationship? Luis needed to know.
