Where should I stay?
We are listing some hotels in key areas that we think that you should consider.
Renting an Airbnb might also be an affortable option. Due to the large amount of traffic in San Salvador, try not to stay too far away. Consider staying in the following areas: Santa Tecla, Ciudad Merliot, Nuevo Cuscatlan and Antiguo Cuscatlan
What airport should I use?
Luckily for you, El Salvador only has one international airport. "El Salvador International Airport Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez" at Autopista Comalapa.
What is the weather and climate like in the area?
In this time of the year, the temperature can range from 75-90 F. We usually have lots of rain, which is why all of our events will be held inside. It will be humid, and the type of humidity feels a bit stronger than in Charlotte, NC.
Are there any cultural traditions or best practices guests should be aware of?
Greetings: men usually shake hands with both men and women, and women give a light kiss on the cheek.
Formality: People usually call each other by their professional or academic titles, unless they invite you to use their names.
Community Focus: Family and friends are a central part of life; meals and celebrations are very common.
Punctuality: Everyone is always late. Well... not everyone. But there is a tradition that if you are invited anywhere at 6 pm, you should show up at 6:30 or 7 pm. This is because we believe that being the first one to show up is embarassing.
Religion: Most people are catholic or evangelical; take these beliefs into consideration when talking about anything.
Will I have service in El Salvador?
Maybe (?). We encourage everyone to contact your phone plan companies to know if your specific plan covers international data. For example, some plans cover cellphone data and iMessages, but will charge you more for international calls.
What if I don't have service in El Salvador?
We recommend downloading WhatsApp. In El Salvador, you will have access to public WIFI nets, and will be able to use iMessage and WhatsApp messages and calls through it.
You are also able to purchase prepaid sim cards to use during the trip, as long as your phone is able to take a physical card and is not an E-SIM only phone.
Tipping: 10% is appropriate in most restaurants and bars. Some already include the tip in the bill.
