Brooke's Version: While preparing for shift handoff as a new nurse, my preceptor warned me not to be discouraged by the nurse I was going to give report to. I was warned she could be intimidating. Shaking in my scrubs, I approached the scary 5 3 nurse standing outside of Room 8, and the rest of the interaction was a blur. As the next few weeks went by, I didnt see that nurse again. Rumor had it, she left my unit to go work in the ICU, however, she remained friends with some of my coworkers. Through these mutual friendships, I actually got to know that scary nurse, Mackenzie, and she wasnt so scary after all. I got to see how kind and caring she was, always putting others first and going out of her way to help anyone in need. I couldnt help but fall in love! Our first official date consisted of Mackenzie getting a little too tipsy and having an allergic reaction, but I still stuck around (and I am so glad that I did)! She became my best friend, and I couldnt imagine life without her. They all say Marry your best friend and now I actually get to! Mackenzie's Version: Although Brooke and I technically met at work, I would be lying if I said I remembered her. (She really hates when I say that) I had already accepted a position in the ICU and was not paying much attention to any of the new hires. Luckily, Brooke and I had mutual friends which lead to many after work and weekend hangouts where we got to know each other. Like any great love story, I didnt like her much at first. As we got to know each other more, I realized how totally opposite we are. Somehow that just made me like her more. I teach her how to let loose and she teaches me how to handle my finances. All joking aside, we had a lot in common too; our love for dogs, family, friends, and nursing. Our first date was at Eli Cannons. Brooke was trying to impress me with a craft beer spot and I was trying to impress her with tequila shots. The only impressive thing about that date was how much my face swelled up from the allergic reaction I had to our food. Surprisingly, she stuck around after that, and weve been pretty much inseparable since. In the past three years, we became landlords, renovated a home, travelled all over, and now are planning our wedding! I couldnt imagine a better person by my side for all of it!
