Mackenzie and Kohl met at the University of Iowa in 2018 through their mutual friend Shannon Pedersen. Kohl had asked for Shannon's advice on how to reach out to Mackenzie (he did not follow it by the way and instead chose to poke Mackenzie on Facebook...). Mackenzie insists to this day that she would've NEVER responded to a poke on Facebook if Shannon hadn't had told her Kohl was trying to pursue her. Mackenzie and Shannon are college best friends and in fact, Shannon had told Mackenzie that she didn't think she would be into Kohl very much! (Shannon loves you now Kohl don't you worry)

After a couple weeks of texting, Kohl met Mackenzie out one night while she was with her friends and the two spent the night talking for hours on end about their families, friends, and anything else that came to mind. The next day, Mackenzie called her cousin Tana and told her she was certain she had met the man she is going to marry.

Kohl then graduated college and moved to Colorado and Mackenzie stayed behind to finish her last year of college. The two did long distance for a year and a half before Covid eventually moved Kohl back to the Midwest. After Mackenzie had graduated, they moved in together in Minneapolis, MN in their little one bedroom apartment where they would stay for the next 3.5 years.

In August 2022, Kohl got down on one knee and proposed to Mackenzie in front of one of their favorite places to get Sunday coffees and drive around. It was also the place they had their first date in Minnesota after they had moved in together. She cried (shocker, I know) and he was so nervous he couldn't remember the speech he had practiced! It was the most special day! Fast forward to 2024, Mackenzie and Kohl moved into a townhome in Des Moines, Iowa and are so excited to start their new adventure as Mr. and Mrs. in August!
