Mackenzie + Kayla

May 11, 2024 • Cedar Rapids, IA

It all started with a swipe right and a silly cat meme. Kenzie had just moved to Florida and Kayla had moved back home after attending college in the midwest (the best place ever). A lot of decisions had to be made for them to meet each other. During COVID, Kenzie was tired of being stuck inside and started thinking about moving to a different state. Kenzie did some research (as she occasionally does) and decided she was either going to move to Scottsdale, AZ or St. Pete, FL. Thankfully, she chose Florida. In August of 2021, she packed up her little Ford like a sardine can, grabbed her dog, and hit the road, leaving her friends and family behind. She made a promise to herself that she would stay in Florida for a year and if she absolutely hated it, she would leave after that year was up. This was obviously not an easy decision for her to make, but she stuck to her promise and has now lived in Florida for almost 2 years. Kayla moved back to Florida in March of 2020, right as the pandemic started. She spent a year and a half enjoying time with friends and family, coaching basketball, and dabbling in online dating (how else are you supposed to find other lesbians, especially when you have social anxiety?) After months of deleting and reinstalling dating apps, she was ready to come to terms with the fact that she was going to be a single cat lady forever....

Until one day, for whatever reason, she decided to download Bumble, an app she hadn’t tried before. Kenzie and Kayla came across each other, immediately swiped right, and the rest was history. Kenzie said she probably wouldn’t have replied if it wasn’t for the intriguing cat meme that Kayla accidentally sent as an opener. The conversation flowed so effortlessly and after a few days of texting, they were ready to meet each other in person. It was September 24th, 2021. Both of them went into the “date” not getting their hopes up and with the mindset of “whatever happens, happens”. What was supposed to be a chill beach "date" turned out to be the best day of their lives. It felt like the whole world stopped and they were the only two people on the planet. The level of comfortability they felt with eachother was unmatched, like they had known eachother for years. There was an instant connection and they ended up spending the whole day/night together. They just didn't want to leave eachother's side. They both knew that day that this was something different, a feeling they hadn't felt before.

Kayla asked Kenzie to officially be her girlfriend on November 1, 2021, even though they had basically already been dating since the day they met. As typical lesbians do, they moved in together later that same month. A little over a year later, on November 11th, 2022, Kayla popped the question at Kenzie's cousin's house in good ole Mechanicsville, Iowa, home of the Rusty Rench. In the short period of time they have been together, they have been through a lot (moving multiple times, getting new jobs, car accidents, grief, anxiety) and their relationship has been tested, but all of this has only brought them closer together. They hoped to get married on 11/11 as it is the day they got engaged and 11 is the number that has followed them throughout their whole relationship. Sadly, that date was already booked at their dream venue, so they had to choose a different date. They landed on May 11th, which turned out to be the perfect date, as 11 is their number and May is the month that Kenzie's grandma got married.

It was just all meant to be... and every day since the day they met has only confirmed that more and more. They are so excited for the NEW best day of their lives, but even more excited for every day after that. See y'all in May! Better be ready to party.
