Our Story

Kenzie's Version

Whenever people ask about how we met, I love to say that Matt just "showed up at my door one day," because that is - quite literally - what happened.

Matt and I could have met on countless occasions. We both attended Saratoga Springs High School, and although he was a year older than me, we never seemed to cross paths. After high school, we both headed to SUNY Oswego to obtain our undergraduate degrees. However, our paths didn't intersect until he came back to visit our alma mater, when I was a senior and he had already graduated.

I had known of Matt's existence because he has been friends with my best friend, Katie, for many years. Katie and I lived together our senior year at Oswego. When she told me that Matt was coming back to visit for the weekend, and that he was staying with us, I didn't really think anything of it. Little did I know that I would be meeting my future husband!

So he shows up, literally, at my front door one day. We all went out and had a blast. Matt and I became fast friends, then each other's crush, and when I moved home after graduation...a couple. Nearly three years later, we are now living together, planning our wedding, and enjoying our happily ever after in Saratoga Springs. I feel so lucky - I couldn't imagine planning a future with anyone else!

When I met Kenzie, it was as purely random and circumstantial as anything could be in this world. We had gone to the same high school and the same college, and still we had never met - until that night.

I walked through her door and into her life... or so she would one day tell people. It’s true, in a sense, but vastly less cliche. I came to visit her roommate, and Kenzie just happened to be there, singing proxies into a hairbrush. Through our mutual friend, we became friends. She started chatting with me more than she had ever planned. We made inside jokes. I was drawn to her pure heart and her sassy ponytail, and there was no chance that I could keep myself from wanting to know her.

We dated at the threshold of the Summer of 2015 when she was starting her graduate program in teaching. Any time that we weren’t working we were spending together. She brought out a side of me that I forgot I had, and I helped her discover guacamole for the first time. We were inseparable.

The best part about our story, in my opinion, is that it isn’t all that interesting. It wasn’t drama-packed, there were no ultimatums, trust issues, friends who didn’t like me, or disapproving parents. Things were for the first time in my life, easy. Our love is simple. And I want that to be a lesson to the world: Love is not a movie; Love does not have to be a fight; Love is finding someone who makes you forget you’re late for a meeting because you’ve been watching videos of pug puppies on YouTube; Love is genuine; Love is kind; and Love is exactly the reason asking her to marry me was the easiest thing I did in 2017. All the harder things were because she was there to support me. And now she always will be.
