It's hard to say when we met, since it could have been in the halls of Cloonan Middle School or in the Stamford Mall, or any of the other places we probably passed each other growing up, but we definitely crossed paths in the polo-clad halls of Westhill High School, circa the early 2000s. I (Madeline) was probably sporting a saxophone neck-strap tan from band camp (super cool) and a "bohemian" outfit; Logan was a pitcher for the Westhill baseball team, floppy-haired, and once named "Viking of the Month" for his athletic prowess (he'll never forget it).

The summer of 2008 we were both home from college, having largely forgotten about one another, and we found ourselves at the same ultimate frisbee game. "Hey, Maddy," Logan said. "Hey," I probably said back. It's hard to say. He was kind of shiny in the sunlight and I was distracted by how high he could jump. Two games later, in an uncharacteristically bold move, Logan asked me out to dinner. We texted all weekend on flip phones about our love for things like John Mayer (so Connecticut) and went to dinner the next week. I was shaking so hard I almost stabbed myself in the eye with eyeliner. Logan picked me up in his '66 Ford Mustang and shook my mom's hand.

We were long distance—and a little off and on again—for the next year, Logan in his senior year of college and me in my junior year. When I moved to Brooklyn that summer, I asked Logan to help me strap my new mattress to the top of my dad's minivan and move it to my topsy-turvy Williamsburg "three bedroom" with no bathroom sink. Somehow, he loved it there. He fell in love with Brooklyn. I think he loved me too.

I cruelly made him move into his own sublet first, though, and he lived in a window-less room with a couple and a cat named Rudy, who was very fat and meowed loudly. Six months later, we moved to Park Slope, and moved in together. We took a two-year lease, but not before we each separately called our mothers. Do you think a two-year lease is crazy? we asked. No, they both said. Two years will go fast.

Two years did go fast. In fact, eight years went fast. Through those years, we've become part of each other's families, become our own small two-person (plus cat) family, and we've created—and cemented—so many friendships. We can't wait to get married, and we can't wait for you to be there.
