Chris and Maddie met at Lehigh University in University Choir. They didn't start dating until the spring of 2022, right before Chris was about to graduate. They visited each other often when Maddie was still in college and Chris was living in center city Philadelphia. Maddie graduated the next year and started working. They went on a trip to Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry in the fall of 2023.

On the day of their engagement, Chris took Maddie to Jim Thorpe to tour the town. They saw Asa Packer's mansion and the old jail house. They took a walk along the Lehigh River and went out for a nice dinner. Then he drove her back to his house in Manayunk. Secretly, he had his friends rearrange the furniture in the living room. He had a slideshow of pictures of them playing on the TV with flowers and a candle. Annie's Song was playing in the background. He said a few words, and then proposed. Maddie was shocked, but so excited.
