I knew I was falling for Jackson in February of our freshman year when I won a writing competition and he was the first person I called and ran to--he picked me up and spun me around like we were in our own movie (I'm sure embarrassing at worst and annoying at best to witness, but for me it was magical and sweet).

I was set to be out of town the following summer, merely a month after we'd officially started dating. And then Jackson was set to go abroad the fall semester. And then I was to go abroad in the spring. Some of those plans were altered, but in the end we still struggled through three separate periods of long distance. I wrote him letters, he called me every day. We haven't been apart since.

We joked about getting married after our three months (puppy love at its most aggressive), we contemplated it and drew up plans after our year and a half (thank the Lord we did not actually get married at that point), and then we let it rest for a while. Let ourselves marinate in the love we were learning to create and live by. Let ourselves fight and scrape our knees and go to bed angry. Let ourselves mourn and apologize and rebuild.

When Jackson proposed, he did not shake or stutter or stumble over himself with nerves. We are right, we are good, and we are our own cocoon of love.
