Things to Do

Portland

Powell's Books - the largest independent bookstore in the world, and a Portland must-see. If you've ever received a book from us, it probably came from here.

Forest Park - one of the country's largest urban forests and a favorite spot for us to trail run in the city. Try taking the Wildwood Trail up to the Pittock Mansion for views of the city and Mt. Hood.

OMSI - the coolest science museum for all ages. You can even check out a submarine floating in the Willamette River where Andrew used to give tours.

Washington Park - home to the Portland International Rose Test Garden, Japanese Garden, Oregon Zoo, and Hoyt Arboretum.

Food and Drink - there's excellent food in every area of Portland, but check out some of our favorite restaurants that are walkable from our home if you happen to be in the area.

Fun Shopping Streets - NW 23rd, the Pearl District, Mississippi, Hawthorne, Alberta Arts District

Columbia River Gorge

Multnomah Falls - An iconic Oregon landmark that you'll drive right by on the way to Cascade Locks. timed entry permits are required between 9am and 6pm.

Bonneville Fish Hatchery - Stop and see our friend Herman the Sturgeon who is a VERY! BIG! FISH! Plus its free and on the way.

Dry Creek Falls - A nice hike straight out of town in Cascade Locks. Just over four miles round trip along the Pacific Crest Trail to a cool waterfall.

Old Highway 30 - The original highway through the area that parralels I-84. It passes lots of waterfalls and other historic sites. A slower drive, but really a nice one.

Vista House - A major stop along Highway 30. You'll have fantastic views of the Columbia River in both directions.

Beacon Rock - An iconic landmark on the Wahsingotn side of the Gorge. Two miles round trip and straight up the side of rock pillar. If you aren't into heights, this one probably isn't for you, but it's pretty cool. You do need a permit for parking, but you can buy it from machines onsite.

Angel's Rest - Enjoy a 4.8 mile hike with beautiful views of teh Columbia River Gorge. It's a popular hike from Portland, so it can get busy. Parking required a Northwest Forest Pass, or day pass, which you can buy online.

Hood River - Town is about 20 minutes from Cascade Locks. Has a cute walkable downtown, lots of breweries, and a great waterfront park where you can enjoy the Gorge-ous surroundings (<-Andrew wrote that).

The Fruit Loop - Starting in Hood River, venture out into the surrounding area to a plethora of orchards, wineries, and more with views of Mount Hood. Check out the Fruit Loop website for a map of stops.

Mount Hood

Timberline Lodge - A historic lodge right at tree line that has some pretty neat architecture and big views from the mountain. A good place to feel small. Inside there is a small museum that gives some history of the area. Also, if you're looking to ski in the summer, the ski area is normally open through August!

Mirror Lake - Hike up to a lake with views of Mount Hood. From the right angle, Mount Hood is also reflected in the lake. Continue up Tom, Dick, and Harry from more adventure and views of other surroudning mountains.

Trillium Lake - A popular drive in destination for lake access with big views of Mount Hood.

Zigzag Overlook - Cool hike along the Timberline Trail, starting from Timberline Lodge. The hike takes you to an overlook of Zig Zag Canyon.

Cooper Spur - The most challenging hike on this list. Lots of climbing up the North side of Mount Hood. Its a rad hike, but you have to work for it.

Solera Brewery - A favorite stop of ours between Mount Hood and Hood River with outdoor seating and a full view of the mountain.
