Let’s set the scene. The year is 2011. The place, Austin Texas. Our story opens on a young man and woman, having dinner together for the first time at a little Mexican restaurant in a strip mall in Cedar Park, completely unaware that they have just embarked on what will turn out to be a nine-and-a-half hour long first date.
Maggie and Hunter first connected on the online dating site OKCupid - Maggie messaged Hunter first! - and wasted no time in meeting up. That first meeting is now affectionately referred to as the “Pineapple Adventure.” After dinner, the couple changed venues to a nearby pub for drinks, having each decided that they weren’t ready for this date to be over yet. Maggie wasn’t sure what to order, so she asked Hunter to surprise her. Hunter, in his nervousness and excitement, could not for the life of him think of a good drink surprise, and so he asked the bartender to make or recommend something. Serendipitously, the bartender made a pineapple upside-down cake drink.
Somehow, in the way that these things just magically happen, that particular drink inspired the two to go across the highway to HEB, buy a pineapple and a chef’s knife, and take it all over the city taking pictures with it. After hours of fun and pictures at many of Austin’s most memorable landmarks - The Capitol Building, Zilker Park, Toy Joy, The “Hi How Are You” Alien on the Drag, and others - they took the pineapple up to the cliffs overlooking the Pennybacker Bridge, cut it up, and ate it.
After a month of dating and whirlwind romance, life conspired to separate our intrepid heroes. Maggie’s life took her to Indiana, while Hunter stayed in Austin. Years passed and the pair fell out of touch. Maggie pursued a degree in Economics at Indiana University while Hunter continued working at his family’s moving company. Other relationships came and went.
Then, in February of 2017, came the reconnection. A facebook notification caught Hunter’s eye - “Today is Maggie Marsh’s birthday!” On a whim, he decided to send her a birthday message. She responded promptly and after a little conversation it
was quickly clear to both of them - there was something there. Each of them realized “Wow, we have a lot more in common than I thought, way back when!” As their views on life were revealed to be incredibly aligned, facebook messages became texts became skype calls and before long, they were discussing a visit. Two months and 3 visits later, the two of them took their first road trip together, U-Haul trailer in tow, to move Maggie not only back to Texas but to her new home with Hunter.
For Maggie, it was like pieces of a puzzle suddenly clicking together and a beautiful picture being revealed. Here was a partner that she could love and support for a lifetime. For Hunter, it was like he had been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole all his life, like everything that came before was life in black and white. She made him feel like the world had magic in it again. He had found his perfect match.
On September 1st, 2017, up on the same cliffs where their first (and second!) Pineapple Adventure came to a close, Hunter asked Maggie to marry him. Now, they are eagerly anticipating what Pineapple Adventures their future will hold.
