Things to Do

Leatherwood Activities

Leatherwood has lots of fun activities to explore during your stay!


Hiking Trails - there are many great trails to hike at Leatherwood! Our personal favorite is the Daniel Boone trail which you can access off Elk Ridge Road or Wagon Ridge Road.


Ziplining - there is a super fun canopy adventure course at Leatherwood that takes you through the treetops. Includes six zip lines and two suspended bridges!


Horseback riding - enjoy a relaxing trail ride through Leatherwood Mountains! No experience needed if you're a beginner.

Wilkesboro Activities

Wilkesboro is about a 30 minute drive from Leatherwood. Its a small town located on the south bank of the Yadkin River with some great places to eat and explore! Here are some of our frequently visited spots:


Dooley's Grill & Tavern - Great spot to grab a burger and a beer! Try their signature roast beef sandwich!


Glenn's - An old school style diner with lots of milkshakes. Perfect for a grab and go lunch!


Two Boros Brewery - Local brews and wood fired pizzas.


Yadkin River Greenway - Great system of walking paths along the river.


Wilkes Heritage Museum - Exhibits tell the story of Wilkes from its beginning through Native Americans, Moravian explorers, Revolutionary & Civil War heroes, moonshine and racing, Daniel Boone, Gov. Montford Stokes, the infamous Tom "Dooley" Dula, natural disasters like the 1916 and 1940 floods, and much more.


Blowing Rock Activities

Blowing Rock, NC is an adorable town right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, about a 45 minute drive from Leatherwood. There are lots of great shops, places to hike, and awesome restaurants! Here are some of our favorite spots:


The Speckled Trout - Great lunch or dinner spot that specializes in classic Appalachian food. As its name suggests, the trout is really the shining star dish here!


Storie Street Grill - Locally sourced New American fare, plus wines, microbrews & spirits in an upscale, casual setting.


Bistro Roca - Upscale-casual bistro & bar serving New American comfort foods & pizzas from a wood-burning oven.


Blowing Rock Brewing Company - Local brewing facility with a restaurant serving pub style food.


Sunset and Vine - Wine and cheese shop that offers wine by the glass, wine flights, and cheese and crackers.


Glen Burney Hiking Trail - Awesome hiking trail steps from downtown Blowing Rock that features a handful of waterfalls!


Moses Cone Hiking Trail - Right off the BlueRidge Parkway, this area hosts 25 miles of carriage roads great for hiking. Stop by the Moses Cone house to shop for locally made crafts!


Shopping - There are lots of adorable shops in downtown Blowing Rock, including clothing boutiques, toy stores, a Kilwins Ice Cream Shop, and local art galleries.

West Jefferson Activities

West Jefferson NC is a resort town in Ashe County, about a 45 minute drive from Leatherwood. Lots of cute shops and places to eat! Below are some of our frequently visited spots:


Black Jack's Pub and Grill - Down-home spot serving handmade burgers, wings & other grub, plus cocktails in a simple setting. Try the Black & Bleu Burger!


Ashe County Cheese - Cheese factory and store selling curds and other dairy products, plus candy, fudge and ice cream.


New River Brewing Ale House - the go-to destination for craft brews in Ashe County, NC!


Shopping - There are some great clothing boutiques, antique shops, and art galleries to explore!

Boone Activities

Boone NC, which neighbors Blowing Rock, is another town right off the Blue Ridge Parkway about a 45 min drive from Leatherwood. Home to Appalachian State University, this town features great places to eat, drink, and hike! Check out some of our favorite spots below:


Proper - Homestyle southern cooking with a modern, seasonal slant.


Vidalia - Refined but casual nook serving contemporary Southern cooking & diverse wines in an intimate space.


Black Cat Burrito - Hip, casual restaurant & bar offering a menu of Mexican classics, plus drinks & live music.


The Pedalin Pig - One of our favorite barbecue spots in the mountains!


Dan'l Boone Inn - Down-home Southern comfort food served family-style in one of the town's oldest buildings.


Grandfather Mountain - North Carolina state park near Linville, North Carolina. At 5,946 feet, it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Features a mile high swinging bridge and wildlife habitats.
