The whole thing was a setup from the start. A little backstory, Keaton and his family attend Southside Baptist, and have for his whole life. Makayla started going in 2024 and made some close friends. Well, these friends colluded with Keaton's parents to set us up. While Keaton was visiting from school in December, they all went out to lunch after church and invited Makayla, who did NOT want to go. She knew it was a setup and was not happy about it, but her friends basically forced her to go. The lunch was super awkward and very clearly staged, with Makayla and Keaton forced to sit directly across from one another. Very few words were said between them. That evening, the young adults group at Southside met, and Keaton, knowing Makayla would be there, decided to attend. She avoided him the whole night, and left as soon as she could, so Keaton couldn't try and ask for her number. Keaton, not taking the hint, asked Franklin, the youth pastor, for her number and texted, asking her to coffee. She declined and said that we could just be friends.Less than a week later, Makayla was visiting her family in Temple, and she decided that it wasn't fair for her to just dismiss Keaton after the awkward lunch. So, she reached out and asked him to coffee at the Summer Moon in Temple. They went in as friends, but after talking for a solid 2.5 hours, came out as something maybe a little more... We talked about everything from family to guns to cars to theology and to flowers, where we discovered that we both had the same favorite flower, the blue hydrangea. Makayla didn't believe that Keaton even knew what a hydrangea was, and thought he was lying to try and get some brownie points. Keaton doubled down and showed her a picture of a plastic blue hydrangea that he kept in his apartment.Not long after, for our second date, Makayla invited Keaton to spend a day in Waco together, visiting the Silos, and perusing downtown. At the end of the day, she was going to Christmas dinner with her family, and decided to invite Keaton along to that as well. However, she did not realize that it would be not just with her parents and brothers, but a whole half of extended family too. Makayla was terrified, and offered Keaton an out, but he said it was fine. We went in and had a good Christmas dinner, and got ice cream afterwards.We continued to text over the next month, growing closer, until January 4th when Keaton asked Makayla to be his girlfriend.

How We Met

Keaton knew he was going to propose after the summer ended, but didn't know when, where, or how. Makayla was to subtly drop some hints that she was ready for it by sending Facebook Marketplace listings of rings she liked... Keaton ended up finding a good deal on one and made a very poor excuse to go to Frisco to pick it up. All the while Keaton was planning and trying to keep it a secret, Makayla knew something was going on. She began to suspect everything that Keaton did and everywhere he went. When the day came, Makayla was visiting Keaton at school, he said that they were going to a "nice place for dinner." Makayla pretty much knew that this was the day, so she bought a new dress, did her hair, makeup, painted her fingernails and toes. On the way to this "dinner," Keaton made a detour to Miller Springs Nature Center, a place we had been on walks many times before. We walked to the mouth of the trail, where the photographer had set up a blanket with roses on and blue hydrangeas around it. Keaton pulled out a hand written card and asked Makayla to marry him. Of course, she said yes!Right after, we went to Makayla's parents' house where many of our friends and family were waiting to celebrate!
