Adam and Mallory both attended James Madison University (GO DUKES!), but they didn’t meet until the end of Adam’s senior year and Mallory’s sophomore year. One day, while hanging out on the Quad—a popular spot at JMU—Mallory noticed some friends and went over to say hello. Sitting with them was Adam, and that’s when the two officially met. After that first meeting, they continued to bump into each other around campus. Sometimes it was purely by chance, and other times, Mallory might have taken a certain route hoping she’d see Adam. Each time they crossed paths, their conversations were easy and fun, and Mallory’s feelings for Adam began to grow. Adam had noticed how beautiful and fun Mallory was, but he wouldn’t let himself think beyond that. He had recently decided to move to West Virginia after graduation and wasn’t considering starting a relationship. As the semester drew to a close—Adam preparing to graduate and Mallory getting ready to head home for the summer—Mallory’s feelings only grew stronger. She often wondered what Adam was thinking, especially as their encounters continued, but was told he wasn't looking for a relationship because he was moving. This disappointed Mallory, but didn't stop her from thinking about him and her feelings continued to grow. The week before graduation, Mallory and a mutual friend attended a class that Adam and his friend were in, which included a swing dancing lesson. Adam and Mallory inevitably ended up as partners, and Mallory at first told herself not to think too much about swing dancing with the guy she had developed feelings for, but felt there was something too special about him to ignore. Little did she know that being paired as partners and dancing had Adam questioning his decision not to pursue a relationship. After much prayer and thought, she decided to take a leap of faith. She wrote Adam a letter disguised as a graduation card. Inside, she shared her heart, writing: “I have feelings for you that have grown from getting to know you, and I have felt like maybe you have shown interest as well. But I wanted to share that I trust the Lord with my life and with yours. I pray that if it is in His plans, He would make that abundantly clear, and if you ever wanted to pursue anything, I would be interested. You know where I'll be for the next 2 years.” Mallory planned to give Adam the letter at an end-of-year Young Life luau she knew he would attend. Her heart raced as she told him she had left a card for him inside, pretending it was just a graduation card. But Adam forgot the card and left without reading it. Later, Mallory retrieved it, realizing she’d have to give it to him again. Determined, she went to a pig roast hosted by Adam’s old college house, knowing he’d be there. This time, she successfully gave him the letter, and Adam began to suspect it was more than a simple graduation card. Mallory left the party filled with anticipation, praying he would feel the same way. Upon reading the letter, Adam was in awe of her boldness and truly began to consider the possibility of a relationship. The next day, he reached out and asked if they could meet to talk. With Adam graduating that week and Mallory also leaving, their time was limited. They met the morning Mallory was leaving for the summer, and there they shared their feelings for each other and their mutual desire to pursue a relationship. Despite Adam’s busy Young Life schedule and Mallory being home for the summer, they FaceTimed every single day during that first month. After that month, they reunited in Harrisonburg—where it all began—for their first official date. That day, Adam asked Mallory to be his girlfriend, marking the beautiful start of their relationship.
