Their Story

Although Rick and Marcie both attended The University of Vermont and knew each other while Marcie was in school, they did not start dating until they both were out of college.&nbsp;They joke about crossing paths at the downtown bars during Marcie's college years. When they went on their first&nbsp;date&nbsp;they were both living in South Burlington; Marcie with her long-time roommate Bre, and Rick in his condo with his dog, Luna.&nbsp;

How They Met

It was&nbsp;June 16th, 2016 the Thursday&nbsp;before Marcie was heading to Massachusetts&nbsp;to celebrate her Uncle Dana's&nbsp;birthday.&nbsp; They headed downtown to the Burlington Waterfront where they walked to the pier to watch the sunset. On their walk back towards the truck Marcie suggested getting an ice cream from Burlington Bay. Rick's short response was "I don't eat ice cream." After Marcie got home from the sunset she told Bre&nbsp;that&nbsp;it was fun but it was bizarre because he wouldn't get ice cream... Rick now eats ice cream.&nbsp; Marcie shared about her date with her family that weekend. She and Rick were both nervous and excited for their next planned&nbsp;paddle board date. Fast forward to the end of September&nbsp;when Marcie tricked Rick into meeting her parents, they both knew that this was something serious.&nbsp;

Their First Date

After a little over three years of dating, Rick and Marcie were living in their house in Essex, VT with their two dogs, Luna and Mango.&nbsp; Between traveling together&nbsp;all summer and busy work schedules they were finally going to have a low-key weekend at home the weekend of September 27th. Rick had told Marcie earlier in the week that&nbsp;he wanted to go out to eat on Friday evening. Thinking nothing of it, Marcie got ready for their date. About an hour before they were leaving, Rick told Marcie that he wanted to go to Shelburne Farms to "scout" out a duck hunting spot before dinner. Marcie told Rick she didn't think they allowed hunting there,&nbsp;but again&nbsp;thinking nothing of it, they headed out to "scout" ducks. Rick insisted that Marcie carry the binoculars to look at the ducks...that she wouldn't be hunting? He was carrying the ring box in the empty&nbsp;binocular case. When Marcie turned around from looking at the sunset out on the rocks, Rick was down on one knee. Although Rick had his proposal speech&nbsp;planned, he was unable to complete it because of Marcie's loud screaming. They then had an engagement dinner together at The Inn at Shelburne Farms. Rick and Marcie's parents knew that Rick was planning on proposing but the actual date was a surprise to everyone!
