It all started on one (semi-cold) December night in Lakeland. It was a big night for Polk County residents, this event is the equivalent of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to New Yorkers. 60,000 people, a majestic firework display, and best of all: Sheriff Grady Judd dressed up as Officer Santa. It was the night of the Polk County Christmas parade. We had previously met only in passing. Margo- usually dressed in Florida Southern Women's Lacrosse gear, a messy bun up top, and possessing a contagious charisma, had a very different appearance that night. Dressed in dark jeans, an earthy long-sleeve, hair down, and expertly selected jewelry, she was beautiful. She was externally very different, but still carried the same contagious joy I had remembered from previous encounters. Beyond her beauty, I was curious if her joy was rooted internally or sourced in something external. Eventually we got to talking and looking back. I probably came on a bit too strong. I wanted to know her life story, morals, and values in our very first conversation. I asked her how her previous experiences shaped her current values, what she believed in reference to the world, a higher power, and the intersection of the two, and how these beliefs shaped her future interests. In classic Margo fashion, she didn't miss a beat, she openly shared her struggles, triumphs, and challenges. Walking away from that first conversation it was clear that Margo was rooted firmly in her identity in Jesus. She saw herself as the daughter of a king, not worthy of the kingdom but a recipient of unfathomable grace. It was from the position of grace that Margo was able to externally display the joy of her savior.
