Flights
How to Book flights
Online! Some of my favorites are skyscanner.com and google flights (google.com/travel/flights). Google flights has the option to receive email notifications when prices change for your desired travel dates.
When to book flights
Airlines don't typically release flights until 330 days out (mid August for July 2024) but booking too early (or too late) will most likely be more expensive. Prices typically start increasing rapidly around March so try to book before then.
Best airport to fly out of
JFK and Newark NJ provide direct flights for good rates. Flying out of Philly is more costly with less options. For my Philly friends, I recommend Newark (1.5 hour drive or taking the train)
What to expect from airfare prices
Typically, for July, prices range from $900-$1,700. Anything under $1,000 is a bargain and would suggest booking immediately. Under $1,300 is good and $1,500 is average when booking closer to the trip date. Playing around with dates and departing airports (if that is an option for you of course) can drastically change the price. If you find a good price in February/March I would suggest booking because prices typically tend to only increase.
Getting Around in Greece
Renting and driving in greece
As of 2021, an international driving permit is not required so your U.S. state-issued driver's license will be okay. You can pick up/drop off your rental from the airport just make sure to book in advance to guarantee a better rate. Stick is the standard in Greece so check to make sure your rental is automatic if you're like us and have never driven stick a day in your life. You can contact our travel agent Constantina Marini at kmarini@smileacadimos.gr for car rentals or shop around online.
Visiting downtown Athens
Athens is about an hour away from Anavyssos. The best way to explore Athens is by taxi or metro (subway). You can use Uber to call taxis or an app called FREENOW. I would recommend avoiding driving in downtown Athens at all costs.
Pay and withdrawal cash
Most of your debit/credit cards are accepted in Greece. For cash, the best way is to exchange dollars for euros at your bank prior to leaving for Greece but keep in mind your bank might not have euros on hand so place the request a few weeks in advance. You can withdraw from ATMs using your card in Greece but that comes with a fee. Avoid exchange counters at airports as they can be pricey.
Send a text/call Greek numbers
When calling or texting a Greek number from a U.S. cellphone, dial +30 (hold down 0 for the + sign) in front of the 10-digit Greek number. From a U.S. landline dial 01130
Outlets and Plugs
The standard voltage in Greece is 230V vs 120V in the US so you will require an adapter/bricks that are compatible (available on Amazon). The plugs used in Greece are Type C and Type F. Type C fits into Type F but not the other way around.
Time Difference
Greece is 7 hours ahead from us on the east coast (EST). So 12pm in NY is 7pm in Greece
