Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Is Mexico Safe?

Yes! Las Gaviotas is one of our favorite spots to visit.

We come here every year -- and each time, we don't want to leave!

The community is in a private, gated development with 24-hour security. We feel very, very safe here, and it is an amazing destination for families.

"This subdivision is more than 40 years old but you would never know it because the owners and the homeowners association take great pride in the maintenance of the property. The 300 houses located here all have inviting ocean views because they are terraced up in five rows from the beach. Las Gaviotas (The Seagulls) lies at kilometer 41 along the coast eight miles south of Rosarito and has long been acclaimed by ex-pats from the U.S. as an excellent place to buy a second home close to the border between the U.S. and Mexico."

Do I need a Passport?

Yes! This is easy to do, and if you are short on time you can always expedite.

Please see the Travel & Directions page for helpful links.

Note: We have had friends cross the border without incident using only their driver's license. This could work in a pinch, but we don't suggest relying on this method. If you have a passport card, you can use the Ready Lane to cross the border, which will reduce your border wait.

Do I need car insurance?

Yes! If you are driving your own car into Mexico, you can easily purchase car insurance online or at a vendor before crossing the border. Most car rentals in San Diego allow you to drive across the border as well, and you can set up car insurance with the agency.

Please see the Travel & Directions page for helpful links.

Do I need to exchange money?

No. Most places in the area accept U.S. currency and are often cash only. However, some spots may accept credit cards.

Is there food in Las Gaviotas?

Yes and no. The community usually has a few food vendors at the pool for guests on weekends. We will be serving appetizers, drinks, dinner, and dessert for the date of the wedding, Saturday August 25th.

The community does not have a restaurant or food services on the premises. Each house has a full kitchen stocked with cooking utensils for you to use if you would like to cook at your home. However, guests will need to bring in their own food items, for their stay.

If you forgot or need a food item, there is a market directly across the street from Las Gaviotas called The White Horse. It is a small liquor store that has a good amount of food and general necessities.

There are also many restaurant options just outside of Las Gaviotas for you to choose from, if you would like to plan meals out!

Please see the Things To Do page for our list of recommendations.

Will my phone work in Mexico? Is there Wifi?

Check with your service provider on use/charges in Mexico. For anyone with T-mobile you are good to go and can use your phone just like you do at home with no extra charges.

The Clubouse in Las Gaviotas has free Wifi, and some house rentals also provide Wifi login information.

What if I don't want to drive there alone?

No need to! We can help arrange carpools and caravans if you would like to drive down with a group. Post a message on the Guest Book page to coordinate with others.

Just let us know!

What is the best time to cross the border?

Generally, you won't experience traffic crossing into Mexico. However, border wait times can be rather long on the weekends crossing back to the U.S. We suggest crossing Sunday morning or Monday after morning rush hour. You can monitor wait times here and here.

If you have questions or concerns about anything, feel free to contact us personally and we would be more than happy to help make your stay as easy and fun as possible!
