I've never been to an Indian wedding before, what can I expect?
You can expect three days of colors, partying, dancing, and fun!
There are several events typically leading up to the wedding ceremony and reception, which will be held on Saturday. These events are explained below.
What is Haldi?
Haldi is a fun traditional event of rubbing a turmeric paste on the bride and groom to cleanse them and prepare them for marriage. This paste is known for its medical benefits and anti-bacterial properties. Applying it to the bride and groom blesses them with clear skin for the wedding and helps to ensure they will be free of any illnesses or ailments prior to the wedding. Yellow is a great color to wear for this event!
What is Mehndi?
Mehndi, also known as Henna, is a paste associated with good luck and positive energy. The ceremony is held to wish the bride good health and prosperity as she begins her journey onwards to marriage.
What is sangeet/garba?
The sangeet is a dance party held the night before the wedding; a festival of music and colors designed to allow everyone to bask in the happiness and excitement surrounding the couple. In Gujarati tradition, the area of India where Nirav's family is from, the sangeet is called a garba due to the most prominent dance. Garba, comes from the sanksrit word garbha, meaning womb. The dance honors and celebrates feminine divinity. Wear a fun, bright colorful outfit and something you can easily dance in.
What should I wear to the different events and what's the dress code?
Haldi: Dress code is casual. Color: yellow
Mehndi: Dress code is casual. Colors: green, orange, pink
Sangeet/Garba: Dress code is semi-formal. Colors: bright and festive.
Wedding Ceremony: Dress code is business casual/semi-formal. Color: anything but red or white.

Do I have to wear Indian clothes? Where can I buy them?
That's completely up to you! There will be a mix of Indian and American outfits throughout the wedding weekend and you should wear what you feel most comfortable in. AZA fashions (www.azafashions.com) is a great website if you're looking to order Indian outfits on-line. Please make sure to read the size charts and get accurate measurements before ordering. You can also see if there are any Indian stores in your area and go shopping in person. Edison, NJ has a large selection of stores for those in the tri-state area.
