OTHER ITEMS TO THINK ABOUT
- Wall current in Italy is 220v
- Dual voltage items are safe to bring
- Items with heating elements MUST be dual voltage (curling irons, straighteners, clothing steamers) or they will overheat
- Comfortable shoes are a MUST for touring
Italy uses the Euro (€)! See below for some special considerations.
VAT - VALUE ADDED TAX
Paying with cash may mean that you can avoid paying the VAT, ask about it. If you pay with a card, you will not have this option. More information on VAT and VAT refund: https://www.italist.com/magazine/how-to-get-a-vat-refund-italy/
"LOCAL CURRENCY" VS. "USD" OR "CONVERT NOW"
When using electronic payment platforms (credit card/debit card/ATM) ALWAYS choose "local currency" over "USD." Choosing USD means that you are authorizing the machine to handle the currency conversion and the rate is generally 10-15% HIGHER than what your bank will charge.
CASH & ATMS
If you want to use cash, the best way to get it is from an ATM when you arrive. ONLY use ATMs physically attached to banks and the "local currency" rule applies. Let your home bank handle the conversion rates, you will get the best deal.
AVOIDING INTERNATIONAL FEES
Check your credit cards and debit cards. Some have free international transactions and others will charge you a fee for using your card internationally. Make sure you know what your options are before you travel.
CELL PHONE COVERAGE
Europe handles phones and internet quite differently than we do in the states. Locals rely heavily of Wi-Fi hotspots and leverage apps to make calls instead of using traditional cell phone service.
Most local companies use the app "WhatsApp," which allows for messaging and calls within the application. WhatsApp requires internet access to send/receive so you will be able to send and receive calls and messages while on Wi-Fi.

If you think you will want to connect while you are off Wi-Fi, you should consider International cell service or an "eSIM" card if one works with your phone.
We recommend researching your International options with your carrier - Verizon has a $10/day international plan with data or $100 for the month.
If you are going to use eSIM, we have heard Airalo is one of the best.
NOTE: You must download WhatsApp in the US so it populates with your US phone number or it will not be able to register.
