Chapter 1: How We Met
We first met on a Saturday morning in October of 2022. I had just started my first job at KFC, which had just reopened after being blown over in a wind storm. Because of the reopening, new employees were streaming in everyday, so it was a bit difficult to keep track of all the new faces. One morning before we opened, I was assigned to pre-opening the fry cartons so that they’d be quick and easy to use during our open hours. “Popping boxes” is a very long and monotonous job, so eventually, one by one the rest of the crew joined me in my final task before we opened, all faces I’d never seen before. Last to join us, was a girl with wheaty blond hair, blue eyes, and a slightly mischievous grin. We all stood quietly working on our cartons, when the awkward voice of this girl broke our calm and pleasureable silence.
“Do you guys like singing?” We all lifted our heads, and the two girls who were working with us, quietly admitted that singing wasn’t so bad.
“You guys should sing.” The girl said impishly “Like, right now?” asked the boldest of us three.
“Yeah, you guys should sing Bohemian Rhapsody” For a while the two girls looked at each other awkwardly, but eventually, their voices came, slowly, solemnly, and hauntingly. I looked up at the face of the strange girl standing beside me. She was grinning from ear to ear, yet in her eyes I could see a twinge of discomfort.
“Okay you guys can stop, you’re making me uncomfortable” she chortled, as the others began to laugh. I chuckled to myself, never in my life had I been in a situation like this, nor had I witnessed someone so bold, and strange, and funny. This was just the beginning, and I had no clue what was coming for me....
Chapter 2: A Collection of Moments
A Cup of Dish Soap
We worked at KFC, but our store was also an A&W, and so every couple of months we would get new syrups for promotional drinks or shakes. I loved all the new flavors, I loved mixing and mashing, but no one else was ever man enough to try my craziness, until one day.... We had started two promotions, one was a mint shake the other was a raspberry lemonade, one was a gooy green, the other was an alien sludge purple, and when you put them in the same cup, they looked like Tide laundry detergent. I thought that was so fun, that I went around the store asking all my coworkers if they would like to drink my laundry detergent, but for some reason no one did. Then, from behind me came a voice.
I'll do it
And as I turned around, there stood that girl again. She took the cup from me, took a swig, and almost threw up.
A Cup of Hatred
This girl, the one who coersed a few young adults into singing her a song and drank Tide syrup, was beginning to overlap with my primarily nighttime schedule. I started seeing her more here and there, and as she grew her friendships with more of the nightshift people her presence became more and more apparent. One afternoon she was being followed by a few of my friends, all of them in some pleasant conversation, and I don't know what quite came over me. I remembered back to my first encounter with this girl, she seemed like a playful sort of person. Well I was feeling a little playful, and wanting to truly make her acquaintance I walked past them all, and looking at her, with a fun little smile, I told her, I hate you
A Cup of Water
I'm standing in the drive through station, taking orders over the headset. Work is moving at a good pace, everyone's hustling and bustling, when BANG!
I look down the production line, everyone is gathered around the sides station. As I gaze closer I see a tub of massed potatoes half spilt on the counter, I see the girl I told I hated (all in good spirit), and I see her hand covered in burning hot mash.
Well the show must go on, accidents are a part of the job, so she went to clean off her hand and the rest of us went back to work like nothing happened. I didn't think much of the incident, until I heard my manager call my friend working at the drive through window, so he walked out, and here comes that girl.
Untill that day, we had never really talked to each other, but once our mouths opened, they just couldn't close.
Chapter 3: We like eachother
After she burnt her hand on those potatoes, it was all like a dream. We started messaging over our crew app, all ridiculous things at first, and every days goal was to fabricate something to talk about after work before her morning shift was over. But then we started becoming more vulnerable, talking about deeper things.
I remember this day at work, I had gotten in and taken up my role making burgers, but with every spare moment I gazed under the toster towards the entrance. When she finally walked in... she looked so pretty, in her work clothes and her ponytail. She gave me a first bump through the gap, and I realized that I was in love.
We started spending time together, outside of work. I walked her home from work one day, we started hiking together after that.
I always made it to work early, that's how it has always been, my school was just to far from my home to make it worth stopping by there before my shift started at three, but now, instead of signing in and starting my shift early, I would go talk to that girl.
Finally, after a month of growing our fondness for one another, we talked about how we felt, and it just so turned out that she liked me too.
Chapter 4: The Rest of Our Lives
We didn’t start dating right away, we thought it wise to focus on building a solid friendship before hand. Now, that didn't keep us from spending every moment we had with each other. We started hiking once a week, every night when I got off work I'd race over to her house and we'd go on a drive through the mountains or on a walk to a park or around town. Our work schedules began to aline, thanks to our boss, so each day of work flew by.
We began dating on November 7th, and I proposed to her on June 21st. It's been an amazing journey meeting this girl, who has now captured my heart. She has inspired me in many ways, and has directly and indirectly made me a better man. I pray that God will watch over us, that we will never expel his presence from our home, and that we will be an example of his love to everyone who comes into contact with us.
