You usually can’t remember the first time you meet someone. That moment is usually small. Inconsequential. Eventually, it becomes difficult to recall a time when you didn’t know that person. But for Susi and Martín, that first day is so fondly remembered...

For Susi, it was just another callback. In her third year of college and majoring in theater (and political science), she was no stranger to the audition circuit at Stanford. In fact, her presence was so grounding and assuring that all of the underclassmen looked to her to calm their nerves. They peppered her with questions, and she walked around the sunny courtyard helping them prepare. Off in the corner of that same courtyard, a quiet graduate student sat reading a textbook, and occasionally looked up to admire the spectacle of this wonderfully kind, beautiful woman tending to her flock.

A graduate student finishing his master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Martín couldn’t help but question what he was doing at this audition. On a whim, he had decided to try out for a role for In The Heights, but sitting there, he felt out of place. He hadn’t done theater since high school, and surrounded by all these talented theater kids, Martín had already resigned himself to volunteering to help build sets when casting was finished. Now, who else would walk over to check in on the quiet student off to the side waiting his turn to audition? Susi, of course.

Who knows what was actually said? It doesn’t matter. Susi and Martín met, and, of course, Martín was immediately enamored. On his way out after the audition, Susi cheerfully congratulated him. She told him (very generously) he had done well, and Martín was left thinking about a new bright spot in his life over the winter break.

We started dating after a few rehearsals. Our third date was brunch on a Saturday at Nola, a New Orleans themed restaurant in Palo Alto. At the time, they had the best French toast anywhere near Stanford. For hours, we spoke over coffee. We stayed so long that they were serving dinner by the time we left, and we both knew we had met someone special.

The years have passed since those first exciting couple of weeks. So much has happened. Martín earned his graduate degree. A pandemic forced us to live thousands of miles apart for a year. Martín got a cat. Susi graduated from college on a hot summer’s day. Susi moved to San Francisco. Martín's start-up journey had its ups and downs, Susi got promoted. Martín got a second cat, this time, for Susi. Susi finds the cutest apartment in the Mission for their first home together.

So what’s our story after all this time? Countless dinners cooked from scratch, bringing our friends and family together. A birthday party in Dolores Park with a Toy Story Jesse piñata. Playing softball with friends, dominoes with cousins. Seeing our families in New York, California and Texas. Cheering on the Giants with micheladas and Irish coffees in hand. A proposal at Holly Park.

After six years together, we’re so excited to celebrate with you all!
