In early summer 2023, Mary was around two years in to working the night shift in the emergency department in Toledo OH and commuting everyday from Ann Arbor. One of the nurses at work with whom Mary had developed a friendship, Kaylin, insisted that Mary needed to meet her neighbor, and kept talking about what a great guy he was. Intrigued, Mary asked to see a picture of this mysterious neighbor. Jon, not having much of a social media presence, did not have many pictures to creep on. So on a weekday morning around 3 am, Mary and Kaylin found themselves scouring the only online presence with much information on Jon-his Linkedin Page. After seeing his profile picture, Mary said Wow Kaylin, hes pretty hot! You can give him my number! The next day, Kaylin and her husband showed Jon some pictures of Mary and he thought she was really cute and couldnt wait to meet her. Shortly after that Mary and Jon started texting and then went on their first date to Knights in Downtown Ann Arbor and spent over 5 hours talking, closing down both Knights and the bar afterwards. Their relationship grew over the next year while Jon took care of Mary during her long night stretches, hosting her at his house in Ohio and always making sure dinner was on the table when she woke up. Eventually, Mary transitioned to a fulltime job in Plymouth, Michigan and was done with the commute, and they were ready to build a life together in Michigan. In that first year together, Jon and Mary often talked about how they wanted a house in the country so they could have a big garden, some chickens and goats, and be near family. Very early into their house hunting journey, they found the perfect place in North Ann Arbor, near Marys family and Jons sister and her family. On the day of closing, Jon proposed to Mary in front of their sisters, and they celebrated at one of their favorite local restaurants after with lots of wine. August 2025 update: Jon and Mary moved into their country house in September 2024 and immediately started making it their home. In the fall, Jon put in all new flooring in the upstairs of the house and taught Mary how to paint but always did the cutting in for her as they transformed the second floor. He added some walls in the basement so Mary could have the home gym of her dreams. In the early spring, he built a custom mudroom off the garage entrance. They also welcomed home a wiener puppy named Betty, and Ruger has loved getting to know her little sister. Summer brought the biggest project yet….building the much awaited pole barn. Luckily with the help of the Amish. The building is done, the concrete is in, the electricity hook up is pending, and the years of Jon’s finishing it to his high standards await. Jon and Mary hired some excavators to dig a large pond on the back of their property and it has nearly filled up already thanks to the natural water table and rainwater. Jon built them a custom chicken coop for their 7 chickens (well really 6 because one turned out to be a rooster), and they have started laying eggs. Jon also built Mary 3 large garden beds and she planted shishito peppers (IYKYK), zucchini, green beans, banana peppers, jalapeños, tomatillos and 3 different types of tomatoes, and she’s been lovingly watering and harvesting all summer.
