Many of you have heard the story—the full story—but for those who haven’t, buckle up. You’re about to hear a tale of love so improbably sweet it could have rolled straight off a Hallmark movie set.Matt and Alyssa’s journey doesn’t begin with them. It begins with another couple: Sam and Emma Hannouche. Sam had been Matt’s best friend since second grade, and Emma met Alyssa in college, where the two became close friends. Sam, a North Carolina native, decided to attend college in Michigan to be with Emma, who had enrolled at Oakland University. His bold move to follow the love of his life would, unknowingly, set the stage for the chapter we’re reliving today.Fast-forward more than ten years to Sam and Emma’s wedding. Love is in the air—but not just for the bride and groom. Behind the scenes, schemes were brewing, plans were forming, and a full-scale “parent trap” was underway, all hidden from the two unsuspecting singles: Matt and Alyssa.It started at the bridal shower in North Carolina. That’s where the foundation of this matchmaking conspiracy was poured. Matt’s mother, Cindy, met Emma’s mother, Cary, and the conversation drifted to the wedding party. Then it happened. Or as Alyssa later dubbed it: the mail-order bride moment.Cary pulled up the wedding website and showed Cindy a photo of Alyssa. Cindy took one look and was instantly sold. Thrilled with her discovery, she hunted down her son and declared, “I want that one!”Matt, thoroughly bewildered by whatever “that one” meant, humored her long enough to hear the pitch—Alyssa was adorable, he should try to make a move, and so on. He brushed her off… until he glanced over and saw Cary wearing the mischievous grin of a child who had just stolen from the cookie jar. In that moment, everything clicked—and Matt started to realize that a full-blown setup was unfolding around him.The final layer of the trap dropped later that evening. After Sam and Emma finished opening gifts, they pulled Matt aside with the kind of grin only lifelong friends can get away with. “Soooo, Mattttt… you’re walking with Alysssssa. She’s single. You’re single. And honestly… we think you two would be really cute together.”Matt appreciated their enthusiasm, but he dismissed the idea. He ignored the matchmaking hints, the nudges, the winks—the whole operation. What he didn’t know was that Alyssa had been told none of this. She was completely unaware that an entire network of parents and friends were plotting behind the scenes. And so Matt remained blissfully unaffected… all the way until the rehearsal dinner.The rehearsal dinner was where everything shifted. On the way in, Matt had been recounting the chaos of the North Carolina bridal shower to one of the groomsmen, Malcolm—explaining how his mom and Cary had tried to set him up with a girl he had no intention whatsoever of pursuing.Then he walked into the room.Across the way, he saw her—for the very first time—and his world simply… stopped. Time felt suspended, sound faded, and all he could see was Alyssa. Without looking away, he muttered to Malcolm, “Welp… change of plans. I’m all in.”From the moment he saw her, he made it his mission to talk to her. And Alyssa, in true comedic contrast, made it her mission to avoid him like he was patient zero of COVID-19.What followed could fill another chapter—persistence met with mixed signals, determined approaches met with strategic evasions. Eventually, Matt made progress. He asked her to dance, and for reasons no one will ever fully understand, she actually said yes.But when the night ended, the story nearly stopped there. Because she dodged him again.Crushed, Matt climbed into the car with the groomsmen, resigned to defeat. But the engine didn’t start.“Why aren’t we going?” he asked.“Did you get her number?” Malcolm asked.“No.”“Then we’re not leaving.”“Guys, seriously—”“NO. Get out. Go ask for her number. Now.”Reluctantly—and with little hope she was even still around—Matt got out of the car. He searched the venue until he found her in the bridal suite, helping clean up. Realizing he couldn’t just walk in, ask for her number, and disappear, he grabbed a broom and helped tidy up. And when the moment finally felt right, he asked.And by what Matt can only describe as an act of God—because truly, there was no logical reason for her to say yes—Alyssa gave him her number.From that moment on, they’ve been inseparable. They haven’t stopped talking since.

Dress Code

Thursday: Live music, street fair, food vendors and lots of additional fun to be had night on the town.

Family Night 

Saturday Morning, Boats leave to Mackinac Island! Be ready to watch as they exit the river into Lake Huron to start their race.

Sail Boat Races 

All day Friday! More activities about town to enjoy.
