We love Perthshire and the surrounding area of the Byre at Inchyra. Close to larger cities like Edinburgh and Dundee, and right outside of Perth, you can explore urban Scotland and also quickly escape to smaller towns and villages or the countryside. We recommend finding time for some pitstops at a few of our local favorites:
Take a quick 20 minute drive over to the quaint town of Dunkeld to spend the afternoon. There are a few great restaurants overlooking the river (our favorite is the Taybank), some amazing local shops, and be sure to stop at Aran bakery for some delicious sweet treats. Afterwards, drive a bit past Dunkeld to find the Hermitage. A beautiful national forest, there's a variety of quiet walks, waterfalls, and many scenic overlooks. It's a great way to spend an afternoon!
If you have time, try to squeeze in a trip up to Pitlochry, Matty's favorite town in Scotland. About 40 minute north of Perth, it is known as the "gateway to the highlands," There are great restaurants and pubs, weekly "Highland Nights" in the summer, and the Blair Atholl distillery gives tours and has a tasting room.
For history buffs, the village of Stirling is definitely worth a visit. A 45 minute drive from Perth, the town itself is beautiful and quaint, but the real star of the show is Stirling Castle. The castle was an important backdrop for the likes of Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce. Tour the castle and then relax afterwards at Nicky Tams- a local pub with classic food.
