Sophia and Max’s love story began in the most unexpected way, through her friendship with his sister, Maddie. During their first year of teaching in Colorado Springs, right in the middle of the pandemic, Sophia and Maddie became fast friends while sharing a tiny basement apartment. When Maddie eventually moved back to the Midwest to be with her now-husband, Tom, Sophia stayed in Colorado to keep building her teaching career.

Not long after, during Sophia’s second year of teaching in Denver, a message popped up on Instagram. It was from Maddie’s brother, Max. Out of politeness, she answered, after all, he was her best friend’s brother, and she figured the conversation would fizzle out. But it didn’t. In fact, it only grew. Before long, their late-night chats had turned into something much bigger.

Soon, they found themselves in a long-distance relationship, Sophia in Colorado and Max in North Dakota. But it didn’t take long for both of them to realize that phone calls and visits weren’t enough. With courage and a leap of faith, Sophia made the decision to leave the life she had built in Colorado and move to the farm Max grew up on.

Farm life was a whole new adventure, one filled with hard work, new routines, and plenty of surprises. But it was also filled with love and a vision for a future Sophia hadn’t pictured before. Then, in August of 2024, on the last evening of summer vacation before Sophia’s fifth year of teaching, Max proposed during their evening walk to check the garden and visit their Highland cows, Mabel and Chief. It was simple, unexpected, and absolutely perfect.

Exactly one year later, in August of 2025, they returned to Colorado, the place where their story first began to take shape. On a quiet summer day, with the mountains as their backdrop, Sophia and Max eloped. It was everything they had hoped for: meaningful, intentional, and a reflection of the love they share.
