McKenna and Lawrence met while McKenna was on break at her barista job. She sat at a table with a friend, making fun of a disgusting sandwich her friend was attempting to eat. Lawrence, who was sitting at the table over, joined in the teasing. After the friend left, McKenna and Lawrence talked for a minute before McKenna had to get back to work. They exchanged names, but not numbers.

A few weeks later, Lawrence joined an ASL club. McKenna was already in the club, and offered to send Lawrence a good website for learning ASL. After Lawrence got her number, he flirted by sending her pictures of flowers and mushrooms (it was a really good strategy). Their first date was June 16th, and they became a couple on their second date, on July 2nd 2022.

After more than a year of dating, Lawrence proposed on Lookout Mountain, on October 21st, 2023.
