Visiting Austin

Great eats - Places we love

Salty Sow

Salty Sow is a DELICIOUS gastropub in north central Austin. Tony and I love this place, especially their cocktails and the shaved brussell sprouts. Check out their website here. It can get a little busy on weekend nights, and it helps to have a reservation if you're going during peak dinner hours.

Counter Cafe - Breakfast and Lunch

Counter Cafe is one of our most frequently visited restaurants - delicious breakfast and lunch, and some of the most friendly, laid back service in Austin. It can get very busy between ~9:30-11:30 on the weekend mornings (like a lot of Austin breakfast spots) but it's definitely worth the wait! Meagan always orders Joe's Special (with a biscuit instead of toast, can't forget that), and Tony loves their pork chop and eggs.

Texas French Bread

Texas French Bread was within walking distance of our first Austin apartment, and it is delicious. It's in central Austin (right near the UT campus), just north of downtown. We used to go for breakfast, which is our favorite, but they also serve lunch and dinner. They make all of their bread and pastries in house.

Sugar Shack Bakery (Wimberley)

This tiny little bakery makes some delicious pastries and bread. You can get a

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

These are some of the most delicious burgers in all the land. They source from local farms and suppliers where they can, serve delicious craft beer, and their fries are DELICIOUS. They have several locations in Austin - the location on South Congress is in the middle of the most fun stuff to do (the shopping is great in that area for visitors), but the wait can be the longest. Visit their location on Anderson Lane in North central Austin if you don't want to wait as long.

P. Terry's - like In-N-Out

P. Terry's is an awesome, no-frills burger joint that has multiple locations all over Austin. They serve delicious cheap burgers that are pretty similar to In-N-Out, and Tony and Meagan forever disagree on whether or not it's superior to In-N-Out ("It's not." - Meagan) but delicious regardless.

Getting around town

Lyft works in Austin and is likely your best bet for ridesharing apps. While Uber and Lyft both work in Austin, they may not be the best option for late night rides to and from Wimberley (where the wedding is).

They'll be perfect for getting around town, though!

Austin B Cycle

Austin has an awesome bicycle sharing program for some of the most-visited areas in town. You can rent a bike from any of the B-Stations with a credit card and return it to a different location if you're moving around town. Check out their website and a full map here.

CapMetro - Bus

Cap Metro is the bus system in Austin. The buses are clean, and arrive pretty quickly depending on the route you're taking. Local rides are $1.25, and a day pass is $2.50. You can pay cash on the bus or use their app to purchase tickets. Cap Metro is a pretty reliable service, but you have to plan your routes carefully and may need to still get a rideshare or cab to your destination.

Car2go

car2go offers instant access to cars spread throughout the downtown Austin core. You can find the nearest car on the car2go app, and take it for just a few minutes or a few days without having to return it where you found it.
