It all began on a rooftop in Cappadocia… As the travelers they are, Megan and Evan couldn’t stay in lockdown during the pandemic. In September 2020, they both found themselves in Turkey — Megan with her Delta flight attendant friends, and Evan with his friend Justin. Megan’s group went to a rooftop for sunset and struck up a conversation with Justin. Since Delta is headquartered in Atlanta and both Justin and Evan lived there, it felt like a small-world connection in such a faraway place. Not wanting to leave Evan out, Justin headed back to the hotel to grab Evan so they could all go to dinner as one group. Between a lot of wine, music, and laughter, it was a night none of them would forget. Though they stayed in touch “briefly” after the trip, it wasn’t until May 2022 that the story truly began. By then, Megan had moved to Atlanta, Evan had reached out, and after some persistence and a little hesitation, Megan agreed to go on a date. From that moment, their greatest adventure together began.&nbsp;Their reunion was spent bouncing around the Beltline which is something they still enjoy today especially with Lilly in tow, sometimes in a backpack.&nbsp; Megan and Evan look forward to celebrating their marriage in Italy with their closest family and friends in June!&nbsp;

Getting to Florence by Air & Train

Florence is well connected to several major international airports, and below you’ll find step-by-step directions on how to reach Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence), the city’s central train station. While Delta may seem like the most obvious choice for flights from the U.S., we recommend exploring other airlines and routes as well. Significant savings can often be found by flying through alternate U.S. cities beyond Atlanta, or by booking connections through major European hubs such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Munich, or Paris before continuing on to Florence. Mileage Tip: If you’re considering award flights, be sure to also check Air France and KLM in addition to Delta. All three airlines are part of the SkyTeam alliance, and sometimes the exact same flights that appear on Delta’s site can be booked through Air France/KLM for far fewer miles. However, this requires using their frequent flyer program, Flying Blue. You cannot use Delta SkyMiles for these bookings. If you don’t already have miles in Flying Blue, you must transfer points from programs like American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards. The good news: banks frequently offer transfer bonuses (often around 20%) to Flying Blue, making your points stretch even further.

Florence Airport, Peretola (FLR)

From FLR, the easiest ways to reach the city are by tram, taxi, or Uber. Taxis and Uber are readily available just outside the terminal, though taxis are generally less expensive than Uber in Florence. However, the most convenient and budget-friendly option is the T2 Tram.   To take the T2 Tram, after exiting the terminal, turn left and walk about 3 minutes to the official tram stop, Peretola – Aeroporto. Board the T2 Tram (Peretola–Unità) heading toward the city center.   If you are staying at The Hoxton Hotel, get off at San Marco – Università. For Florence’s main train station, Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence), exit at Alamanni – Stazione.   If flying out of Florence Airport, simply take the T2 Tram back to Peretola – Aeroporto for the most direct and affordable route.   Tickets for all tram and bus rides in Florence cost €1.70. You also don’t need to buy paper tickets in advance; just look for the black “Tap & Go” contactless payment terminals onboard, where you can simply tap your credit card or smartphone to pay.   *The journey from the airport to the city centre is approximately 25–30 minutes.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ)

From BLQ, follow signs to the Marconi Express, the fastest way to reach Bologna Centrale train station. The automated shuttle runs every 15 minutes, though lines can get long at peak times, and takes about 7 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at machines, or you can simply use Pay&amp;Go contactless at the gates for both entry and exit. From Bologna Centrale, take an Italo high-speed train (tickets available in the Italo app) to Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence). *The journey is approximately 40 minutes.

Pisa International Airport, Galileo Galilei (PSA)

From PSA, take the PisaMover shuttle (5 minutes) to Pisa Centrale train station. To find the PisaMover, exit the Passenger Terminal and walk about 40 meters; the stop is located just outside the terminal and clearly marked. Tickets can be purchased from automated machines or at a ticket office inside the airport. From Pisa Centrale, take a regional train (tickets available in the Trenitalia app) to Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence). *The journey is approximately 1 hour.

Rome Fiumicino International Airport, Leonardo da Vinci (FCO)

From FCO, take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini (Rome’s main station). Follow signs for TRENI (trains) after exiting baggage claim and customs. The station is on the ground floor, about a 5–10 minute walk from the terminals via long corridors and escalators. You can purchase Leonardo Express tickets at ticket machines or manned ticket counters in the airport. Alternatively, you can buy them as an electronic ticket in the Trenitalia app by selecting “Fiumicino Aeroporto” as your departure and “Roma Termini” as your arrival. You can also tap-to-pay by card at the platform. *The first leg is approximately 30 minutes. From Roma Termini, take an Italo high-speed train (tickets available in the Italo app) to Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence). **The second leg is approximately 1.5 hours.*

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE)

From VCE, take the ATVO Airport Express Bus for €10 to Piazzale Roma, Venice’s main bus terminal. The bus stops are located just outside the arrivals hall. *The first leg is approximately 20–25 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at ATVO offices or machines inside, at automated machines outside, or directly from the driver or ATVO staff at the stop. From Piazzale Roma, it’s about a 6-minute walk to Venezia S.Lucia (Venice) train station. From Venezia S.Lucia (Venice), take a high-speed train (tickets available in the Italo app) to Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence). **The second leg is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.*

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)

From MXP, take the Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale. Follow the signs for “Treni/Trains” after passport control. The station is on the basement level of Terminal 1, or accessible from Terminal 2 by following posted signs. Tickets can be purchased from machines, their website, https://www.malpensaexpress.it/en/, or in the Trenord app; once purchased, check the platform number to board. *The first leg is approximately 52 minutes. From Milano Centrale, take an Italo high-speed train (tickets available in the Italo app) to Firenze S.M.Novella (Florence). **The second leg is approximately 2 hours.*

What to Expect for Train Costs

Train Travel Tips in ItalyTrain fares between Florence and nearby cities generally range from €15–€50 each way, depending on the route, train type, class of fare, and how early you book. High-speed trains (Italo or Trenitalia) are often less expensive when purchased in advance, while last-minute fares may be higher. Tip: If you know your travel dates, we recommend booking early to lock in the best rates.Once in Florence and other major cities, getting around is easy. You can purchase tickets through mobile apps, use contactless tap-to-pay, or buy tickets at stations and kiosks. Important: Validate Paper TicketsIf you purchase a physical paper ticket for regional trains or buses, you must validate it before boarding. Insert your ticket into the green or yellow validation machines located on train platforms or onboard buses to stamp the date and time. Failure to validate can result in fines often exceeding €50. Ticket inspectors strictly enforce this rule, particularly with tourists, and they will not excuse unfamiliarity—so be sure to validate. If in doubt, stamp your ticket!

Italo is where you can book high-speed trains between multiple cities and Florence. Italo is often the best option for major city routes, such as Bologna, Rome, Milan, and Venice to Florence. In addition to its website, Italo also offers an app, making it easy and convenient to purchase and store your tickets on the go. Italo is the more expensive of the train options.

Trenitalia is the main national railway for Italy&nbsp;and operates the majority of the country's rail services, including high-speed trains and regional lines. This is where you can book regional trains and airport connections not covered by Italo high-speed trains (e.g., Pisa to Florence, Leonardo Express from Rome FCO). In addition to its website, Trenitalia also offers an app, making it easy and convenient to purchase and store your tickets on the go.

A Few Helpful Safety Tips for Italy

Like many major tourist destinations, pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas and on public transportation throughout Italy, especially in train stations, metros, trams, and busy tourist sites. Please be extra aware of your belongings in crowded areas. Pickpockets often work in small groups and may try to create distractions while getting physically close to you. Common signs can include individuals carrying large bags, jackets draped over their arms, maps, or attempting to crowd around entrances, exits, or train doors. A few recommendations:-Keep phones and wallets in front pockets or zippered bags-Avoid placing valuables in open tote bags or loose backpack pockets-Keep backpacks zipped at all times on trains and public transit-Be especially alert when boarding trains or metros Evan has personally used the Nite Ize S-Biner MicroLock clips to secure backpack zippers while traveling, and they work great for preventing easy access while moving through crowded areas. The Hoxton, Florence is a beautiful boutique hotel where we will be hosting our welcome party on Friday, June 12, 2026. The hotel is just a short 10-minute walk from our wedding venue, Palazzo Budini Gattai. While guests may stay wherever they prefer, The Hoxton offers both comfort and convenience, making it a wonderful option for those who wish to be close to the celebrations!

Step-by-Step: Reserving in Our Room Block

Step 1: Click on the “Website” box above. Step 2: In the header box, you may leave the “Select Dates in Calendar” field blank, as the group dates will auto-populate in the next step. However, you must click “1 room / 1 adult” and choose either 1 or 2 adults, since single and double occupancy have different rates. Step 3: Click “Special Code” and select “Group Attendee Code” from the dropdown menu. Step 4: Enter MEGEVA in the Code box and click Add. A new screen with the Room Block information will appear. Scroll down and click “Go To Next Step.” Step 5: Select your room dates (up to 4 nights. On this page, you can also adjust room occupancy if you didn’t in Step 2, and the rate will automatically update. Please note: If two people are sharing a room, the system defaults to one Queen bed. If you need two beds, we recommend that once guests have made their booking (double occupancy room), they email events.florence@thehox.com, specifying the group name MEGEVA, requesting a twin room, and providing the names of both guests in the room along with the booking confirmation number. Since there is a limited inventory (a total of 7 twin rooms), the hotel will then check availability and allocate a room with two separate beds.

How to Set Up Express Transit on iPhone and Android

Florence makes it easy to get around using trams and buses equipped with black contactless payment readers. By setting up Express Transit on your iPhone or Android before traveling, you can simply tap your phone to ride. You don't need to fumble with paper tickets, cash, or kiosks. It’s quick, secure, and the most convenient way to move around the city.

Common routes include Pisa to Florence and the Leonardo Express from Rome FCO to Roma Termini. Trenitalia is especially useful for trips not served by Italo. Trenord – The go-to app for purchasing Malpensa Express tickets between Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Milano Centrale. AppTaxi &amp; IT Taxi – While your Uber app does work in Florence, it’s typically more expensive. Locals rely on taxi apps like AppTaxi and IT Taxi instead. Be sure to set up your profile and payment method before leaving the U.S., since account setup requires SMS verification for two-factor authentication.

Using Your Phone in Europe: Travel Data & eSIM Options

If you’re traveling from the U.S., it’s a good idea to check your cell plan before purchasing an eSIM. Many Verizon and T-Mobile higher-tier plans already include international data, while AT&amp;T’s International Day Pass is about €12/day. For longer trips or heavier data use, an eSIM app can be a more cost-effective option. With an eSIM, you can activate a European data plan on your phone without needing to buy a local SIM card. Two easy options available in the App Store are: Airalo – Offers affordable, data-only eSIM plans that can be activated as soon as you arrive. If you do just one quintessentially Florentine experience, make it sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo. Perched high above the city, this iconic viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Arno River, the Duomo, and Florence’s stunning skyline—all completely free to enjoy.The atmosphere is lively and unforgettable, with people from all over the world gathering on the famous steps to watch the sky turn shades of gold, pink, and lavender. It’s the perfect spot for photos, drinks, and soaking in the magic of Florence. Good news: You don’t need to bring anything! There are carts right there selling drinks and snacks, and they take both cash and card. A friendly tip from us—we did this ourselves! It does get crowded, especially around sunset. Many recommend arriving 1–2 hours early. We didn’t get there that early and still loved it, but just know it fills up fast. How to Get There from the City Center Option 1: Walk (Scenic Route)About a 30–40 minute walk from the city center. Cross the river and head uphill through Oltrarno. It’s a bit of a climb, but worth it. Option 2: Bus (Easiest Option)Take Bus #12 or #13, both go directly up to Piazzale Michelangelo. Bus #13: Great option from areas near the Duomo or east side of the city. Bus #12: Good option from near the train station (Santa Maria Novella) or Porta Romana. Activate 8X PointsBoth buses run frequently (about every 15–20 minutes) and drop you right at or very close to the top. Option 3: Taxi (Quick and Easy)About a 10–15 minute ride if you want to skip the uphill walk. Pro Tip: Take a bus or taxi up and walk back down after sunset—it’s all downhill and honestly one of the best walks in Florence. Trust us—this is an absolute must-do while you're in Florence.
