While to many of you our story may seem to have only begun a few short years ago, our story actually began more than a decade ago:

It was 2011, Dru was the stud of the 8th grade class at R.J. Fisher Middle School, and just like every other girl in the 8th grade, Meghan had a huge crush. It wasn’t until their Freshman year at Los Gatos High School that Dru and Meghan finally spoke to one another; however, as Dru loves to claim, Meghan may have come on a little too strong. Highschool was an interesting 4 years of growth and maturing for both of them, leading to minimal contact. In June 2015, Dru and Meghan graduated from Los Gatos High School. Meghan was heading to Washington State University and Dru to The College of San Mateo for football. At the end of the summer, mere weeks before Meghan left the state, Dru finally took a shot and messaged Meghan via snapchat. While they spent a lot of time together in those few weeks, only a friendship had time to blossom before Meghan left for college. But… that friendship continued! Dru and Meghan kept in touch throughout college with occasional Facetimes and spending time together whenever they were both home for holiday breaks. For instance, Dru took Meghan on their first ever lunch date to BJ’s Restaurant during Christmas break of 2015. In 2016, they found their favorite view spot for long chats, where Meghan told Dru countless times that someday he would fall in love with her, and they would get married. They helped one another through each other’s break-ups in 2017, and Meghan even almost visited Dru at the University of Hawaii for spring break 2018. We won’t get in to why that didn’t work out, though. While they both dated other people in college, they admit now that there was always a little spark between them. In 2019, Meghan graduated Washington State and moved back to Los Gatos to begin her career as a research associate in the bay area. Dru was in his final college football season at Oklahoma State, with plans to continue into a career as a professional football player. In March 2020, Dru signed to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL, but just weeks later, the pandemic shutdowns began. Dru came back to Los Gatos with plans to move to Canada for the start of the season in May 2020. In their usual fashion, Meghan and Dru found a way to spend some time together. They took walks through Vasona Park, fished at Guadalupe Reservoir and consumed way too much In-n-Out together. Dru and Meghan were both single at this point and each realized how much the other had grown and matured over the years.

Now we are to the part of our story that many of you may be familiar with:

In May 2020, Dru received news that his season with the CFL would be delayed. This gave Meghan and Dru more time together and more time for their friendship to evolve. In August 2020, the Canadian Football League cancelled the season. Dru remained in Los Gatos and his plans to move to Canada were postponed until the 2021 season. This was the first time since 2015 that Meghan and Dru were in the same place, at the same time, and for more than just a few days/weeks of holiday break from school. This was finally their chance to test the waters and see if they could become more than friends. In October 2020 Dru and Meghan went up to their favorite view spot and Dru, in his cheesy romantic fashion, asked Meghan to be his girlfriend. Over the next few months, as Meghan had predicted more than 5 years prior, Dru did in fact fall in love. They both did.

You may be thinking “AAAWWWW, and the rest is history.” But there’s still so much more to unpack.

Dru and Meghan’s relationship flourished in the coming months. The rest of the world was on lock down, so they were in their own little relationship bubble. They had been friends for so long that they got to skip all the “get to know you” stuff at the beginning of most relationships. They were able to jump right into the hard talks, and discussions about life and their future together. The 2021 CFL season was slightly postponed, but Dru soon received news that he would need to be in Canada by July 2021. This was the start of a grueling 5.5 months of long distance for the two of them. Just as their friendship lasted through all those years of long distance, so did their relationship. At the end of the season in December 2021 Dru came back to Los Gatos and the two of them vowed to never do long distance again. On January 1st, 2022, Dru proposed to Meghan! Over the next few months, they planned their life together, Meghan quit her job, and the two of them loaded up their cars and drove to Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada for the 2022 CFL season. They are loving their new life together and thank God everyday they never have to endure long distance again.
