Historic Tredegar, home to The American Civil War Center, traces its roots to 1836, when Francis B. Deane founded Tredegar Iron Works. He named his Richmond plant for a Welsh town and iron works. In 1841 Deane hired Joseph Reid Anderson as commercial sales agent. Under Joseph Reid Anderson's ownership, Tredegar manufactured an array of items including locomotives, train wheels, spikes, cables, ships, boilers, naval hardware, iron machinery and brass items.

The plant employed skilled domestic and foreign workers as well as slaves and free blacks. One of the nation's most significant Civil War Sites, Tredegar is now a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Designated Richmond's Official Gateway to the Civil War, Historic Tredegar offers a visitor experience and learning center that includes the Richmond National Battlefield Park Visitor Center, operated by the National Park Service, and an exciting exhibit, In the Cause of Liberty, that explores the causes, course, and legacies of the war from Union, Confederate, and African American Perspectives.

Brown's Island Park + T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge

Brown's Island, Richmond, VA 23219, USA

With the James River running through downtown Richmond, this island serves as a wonderful spot to observe a stretch of urban waterway. The park, a stone's throw from downtown, is connected to the popular Canal Walk. Festivals, concerts and art displays are common attractions.

Beside being a music venue, the island is also home to pathways and is a popular place for sightseeing. Visible from the island is the Belle Isle, the Manchester Bridge, and the ruins of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad Bridge. The Rivanna Subdivision Trestle crosses the island, making it a popular destination for railfans, too.

A walkway extends south from the island into the James River, and another extends north along the Brown's Island Dam.

And don't forget to check out the new Potterfield Bridge - a pedestrian bridge that connects Brown's Island and Tredegar to Manchester! We can now walk about 4 blocks from our house, cross the river on an awesome bridge and land right at our wedding venue (see photo).
