Soaring fjords and moody mountains tower above a diverse panorama of beaches and bogs, forests and barren cliffs. Shaped by colliding continents and grinding glaciers, Gros Morne’s ancient landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander coastal pathways and beachcomb among sea stacks. Cruise the dramatic, sheer-walled gorge of Western Brook Pond. Spot moose and caribou. Hike to alpine highlands where Arctic hare and ptarmigan thrive on tundra, and explore the colourful culture of nearby seaside communities.
Nearby Woody Point are some really great hikes for folks of all levels of fitness:
The Tablelands hiking trail is a short (4 km return) and flat path into the otherworldly Tablelands. This hike can also be made more difficult and impressive by actually hiking up into the Tablelands.
The Lookout Trail is a moderately difficult hike of 5 km return that departs form the Discovery Centre just outside of Woody Point and affords you a panoramic view of Bonne Bay.
Green Gardens is a full day, longer trail of varying lengths depending on the route you take. Through forests and over hills, the path leads you to the Green Gardens of the coast, featuring beaches, sea stacks, a sea cave only accessible at low tide, and wild(ish) sheep.
If you want to venture further afield from Woody Point, the park has many, many other excellent trails (including the Gros Morne Mountain trail), all of which are worthwhile!
Curious about the park and its stories? Visit the Discovery Centre. From geology to plants, moose to caribou, marine life to arctic life and all sorts of other stuff, your questions will be answered here.
Nuts about rocks? Curious about that barren orange mountain in the south, and why GMNP is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Gros Morne: The Story in Stone exhibition reveals the secrets of our amazing rocks and the reason for our WHS designation. It’s a tale of continents, and oceans destroyed and reborn, mountain chains thrust up then ground to sand.
While there, check out the new exhibition, Miawpukek: The Middle River explores the stories and traditions of Conne River, a Mi’kmaw community on Newfoundland’s south coast.
Get out and hike too. From the Discovery Centre you can head up the Lookout Trail onto the arctic highlands for an incredible view on the park and Tablelands, or for a gentler adventure, walk up to the Em Tapper Look-off. Take the community trail into Woody Point, skirting old cemeteries and stopping at one of the best lookouts in the region.

Explore the stunning vistas by taking our Western Brook Pond tour located in the Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This experience is part of Canada’s Canadian Signature Experiences collection, which shows the world the best that Canada has to offer. The pond is located in the long Range Mountains, the most northern section of the Appalachian Mountains surrounded by deep rock walls. This 16 kilometer lake with a depth of 165 meters is home to Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout and Arctic Char and an unusual colony of cliff nesting gulls. The pond is a freshwater fjord carved out by glaciers during the ice age 25,000 to 10,000 years ago. Its water is extremely pure.
Aboard at Western Brook Pond, behold the spectacular glacier-carved land-locked fjord, waterfalls cascading from 2000 feet that often turn to mist before reaching the pond, billion year-old cliffs, and frequent wildlife sightings. Glacial action has resulted in magnificent scenery, with coastal lowland, alpine plateau, glacial valleys, sheer cliffs, waterfalls and many pristine lakes. There is camping in the park, or stay in one of the adjoining seaside communities of Cow Head, Glenburnie, Norris Point, Rocky Harbour, Trout River or Woody Point.
The lake waters are pristine, having had very little impact from human activities. Our vessels, in order to operate on the pond, have a special certification required by Parks Canada and have minimal impact on the environment. This is a two hour boat tour with live interpretation. Refreshments are available. Our boats have canopied decks and on-board lavatories.
This special place is truly a photographer’s paradise. Amazing photos can be produced and you will create absolutely stunning images.
