We get this question a lot. Mexico City is like many cities around the world. It has a mix of everything, including bad areas. We chose the area of Polanco for many reasons including safety, amazing food, and great cultural attractions. Stay vigilant just like you would any city.
What should I expect after landing in MEX?
Melannie spent her childhood there so she'd be a little biased if her only answer to the question was AMAZING THINGS!
We really want you to enjoy your time so here is some info:
It is a big city with lots of different areas, both good and not so good.
It is at a high elevation, pollution levels higher than people expect and has dry weather. So we recommend if you have allergies please bring your medicine and eye drops if you've had dry eyes before! Drink plenty of bottled water because the air is so dry.
There will be a lot of people at the airport and even more in the exits when getting transportation to go to the hotel, so be aware of your surroundings.
Travel time from MEX to the Polanco Zone is about 45 min due to traffic. The airport used to be on the outskirts of the city but now it's in the city as population kept expanding. You will see the buildings changing as you get closer to Polanco.
Bring cash with you. You can use your credit and debit cards in plenty of places but cash is still very present in the city, especially if you want to buy a snack or a gift from a street vendor. The credit card AMEX is not accepted everywhere, so please have a VISA or MASTERCARD. Don't forget to put your international travel notice!
Tell me about the water....
Please drink bottled water while out and about. The hotels in the area have their filtrations systems but we still don't recommend to drink from the tap. Restaurants also have filters in place but it's good to ask for bottled water. We recommend going to the convenience stores like Oxxo or 7-eleven and buying large bottles to keep in your rooms. Hotels usually provide 1 complimentary bottle per day and might have a convenience store in their lobbies.
What is there to do in Mexico City?
Plenty, including a Michelin Star restaurant! There are many attractions in the Polanco Zone including museums, great restaurants, and night life. You can check out the Things To Do Section on the website and also ask your hotel concierge.
