How to Travel to Holbox via Cancún

Step 1: Fly to Cancún, Mexico

Book a flight to Cancún International Airport (CUN), the nearest major airport to Holbox.

Once you arrive, go through immigration and customs.

Step 2: Travel from Cancún to Chiquilá (Ferry Port to Holbox)

There are three main ways to get to Chiquilá, the small port town where the ferry departs for Holbox:

Private Shuttle (Recommended for Comfort & Convenience)

You can pre-book a private shuttle from Cancún Airport to Chiquilá.

The drive takes about 2–2.5 hours.

Cost: $100–$150 USD one way (can be shared among passengers).

Bus (Budget-Friendly Option)

ADO Buses run from Cancún Airport or Downtown Cancún to Chiquilá.

Travel time: ~3 hours.

Cost: $20–$25 USD per person.

Check schedules and book tickets at ADO’s website or at the airport.

Car Rental (Good for Flexibility)

You can rent a car at Cancún Airport and drive to Chiquilá.

The drive is about 2–2.5 hours.

Note: There are no cars allowed on Holbox, so you’ll have to leave your rental in a paid parking lot in Chiquilá (~$5–$10 USD per day).

Step 3: Take the Ferry from Chiquilá to Holbox

Two ferry companies operate between Chiquilá and Holbox: Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos.

Ferries depart every 30 minutes from 6:00 AM – 9:30 PM.

Ferry ride duration: ~20–30 minutes.

Cost: ~$15 USD per person (one way).

No need to pre-book—just buy a ticket at the port.

Step 4: Arriving in Holbox

Once you arrive on Holbox Island, golf carts are the primary mode of transport.

You can take a golf cart taxi from the ferry terminal to your hotel (cost: ~$5–$10 USD).

If your accommodation is nearby, you can walk and enjoy the island’s relaxed vibe.

Additional Tips

Cash: Bring Mexican Pesos (MXN), as ATMs on Holbox can be unreliable.

Packing: Holbox has sandy roads—pack light and bring comfortable sandals.

Weather: Best time to visit is November to April for great weather.

Bioluminescence: Visit at night to see glowing waters (best from June–September).

Final Tips

Currency: The ferry and shuttle services usually accept Mexican Pesos (MXN), so have some cash on hand.

Pack Light: Since Holbox is a small island, try to pack lightly and consider the weather, as it’s often sunny and warm.

Transportation on Holbox: Once on the island, there are no cars—only golf carts and bicycles. You can rent a golf cart for exploring or rely on the island’s taxis (golf carts) for transportation.
