Q + A

Top Questions Asked or Asked About and Answered with a Bit of Playful Snark

One of the more interesting aspects of getting engaged to someone from a different country are the questions people ask you or people asking, "has anyone asked you the question...?"

We thought we would share some of the most frequently inquired about topics, and the ones we have found the most humorous.

Are you going to be on 90 Day Fiancée?

No. *long pause* We are boring and pretty private. A Kitty Cam would be more interesting than us.

Wait, Why are you not having a big Australian Wedding Shindig?

Short answer- Immigration: Even though we technically have 90 days to wed, work visa applications can not be applied for until "adjustment of status" (marriage). *Are you asking to be our Patron?* :D

Can Malcolm (read a book, record his voice, talk me to sleep, etc) for me?

Short answer: Yes- If you can afford the hourly rate :D

Is Malcolm worried about moving from an island to America?

Malcolm lives on the continent of Australia that is about the size of the United States. To fly from the west coast of Australia to the east coast is like flying from LA to NY. He doesn't think giving up "island life" will be too devastating.

Are drop bears a thing?

Yes

Was it hard for Melissa to learn the language?

Melissa isn't fluent in Australian yet, but she can converse ok with the population.

Is Malcolm a Crocodile hunter?

No. He's a Drop Bear hunter and Kangaroo whisperer.

Why doesn't Malcolm fly to Mexico and just cross the border like all the people we hear about (see on social media or tv)

Short answer: That's not how USA immigration works.

What would happen if Malcolm did this answer: Because Malcolm is not from an official UN sanctioned asylum country, he would be processed as a non visa holder illegal alien, put in a detention camp, and flown back to Australia. He would also receive a 10 year minimum ban from entering the USA (extremely unhelpful to our families and us).

Realist answer: The last real comprehensive immigration reform was in the 1980s during the Reagan presidency. USA currently has a no immigrants stance similar to that of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 that would extend to pretty much every country with the Geary Act. There have been numerous band-aid bills since the 1980s to try and fix huge gaps and issues from time to time- like in 1990 when Congress got rid of most of the family based quotas. But immigration law and rules is extremely nuanced and complex, and if you see someone trying to give you shock and awe information in a 30 sec tik-tok or 15 sec news piece, you can bet it is there to play on ingrained societal stereotypes.
