Her Story ﻿It was September 2017 and one of my neighbors and best friends invited me to her birthday party at Hotel Albuquerque and wanted me to “meet” one of her friends. So, I got all gussied up and dressed to, hopefully, impress, and accepted the invite. I was a little nervous but excited and we were seated next to each other at the dinner table. Daniel was a nice man, single parent and divorced like myself and our oldest kiddos were the same age. He had beautiful eyes and the sweetest smile! The evening flew by and soon it was time for cake and goodbyes. That was all I got. A goodbye, nice to meet you ending. I felt like we hit it off, but thought he wasn’t interested in me at all. Fast forward to 2020 and one crappy relationship later and Daniel and I were thrown together again in a Covid bubble of friendship. The same friend who had introduced us three years earlier had started having small dinners and jam sessions at her house on Fridays. I was so excited, but hesitant, to find out that Daniel would be there. I had never heard from him since our first meeting and wasn’t sure if anything would come from seeing him again, but it was nice getting together with people and socializing. We both seemed to enjoy our time together and started getting to know each other better and forming a friendship. One Friday night I came over so tired from a hard week of work and had maybe one to many glasses of red wine. We were sitting on the couch together sharing his phone with the words to the song that was being played so we could sing along. (I wish I could remember that song!). I was tired and so comfortable next to him. I let met my guard down and laid my head on his shoulder. It felt so nice and I kept telling myself to sit up, but I was so comfortable on that shoulder. I got up to go to the bathroom and when I came back and sat on the couch next to him his arm went around me! It felt so nice! After that I found his arm around me often, as we shared the fire out back on cold nights. The next thing I knew, I was inviting him over to look at yarn to make him a hat!

His Story I'm not going to lie, 2017 started out pretty rough. I won't go into details, but I wasn't in the best shape physically or mentally, and wasn't in the running for any parent of the year awards. That's when I decided things need to change; I needed to get my life back on track, get myself healthy, and start treating those around me better. Among the things that I did was start a new band with some friends, and signed up to hike the Grand Canyon. Come September of that year, the band was going well, and training for the hike was bringing my physical health back. One Saturday night, my bandmate was having a dinner party for her birthday (at Hotel Albuquerque!). When I got there, she introduced me to her friend and neighbor, Melissa, and sat us next to each other. The connection was immediate. She was warm, charming and easy to talk to. Of course there was also much shared experience with our adventures in single-parenting. But the end of the evening fizzled. When I could have asked to see her again or get her number, there was a moment of self-doubt, or perhaps the feeling that I wasn't ready to let someone into the chaos of my life. So there was a handshake and a feeling of regret. 2020 brought changes to us all... everyone has a story to tell. For me, I came to decision that it was time to find my soulmate, the love of my life. The old band had run its course, but a new one was forming. Our mutual friend called me in the fall and said she had a covid bubble of friends, some of whom are musicians, and she wanted me to come play music with them. "Hmm, I don't know", I told her. "Melissa will be there", she responded. To which I said "So what time?" The next few Saturdays were spent at weekly gatherings, getting reacquainted and learning what an amazing woman she was. All the warmth and charm from her first impression was genuine. And I realized that her head was on my shoulder, and my arm was around her. She finally closed the deal by insisting on making me a hat!

Our Story The last four years have been filled with amazing adventures, fun trips, family weddings, cohabitating, many highs and a few lows. We've formed strong bonds with each others families and friends, which we value dearly. This is a story that is still being written, and the opening chapter(s) are just about complete. We are excited to see what the next chapters bring, and we cannot wait to celebrate our special union with all of you!
